Product Description

The faith God calls you to is far more than a glowing positivism that shields you from life's struggles. It is one that guides you into a deepening intimacy with the God who sustains you in the broad sweep of life. In Authentic Faith, Thomas helps sharpen your spiritual vision and fortify your commitment by examining ten disciplines God uses to forge a fire-tested faith. A biblical view of these disciplines can safeguard you from disillusionment when---not if---difficulties surface in your life. Sharing scriptural insights, the wisdom of Christians through the centuries, and cogent personal observations, Thomas explores the disciplines of selflessness, waiting, suffering, persecution, social mercy, forgiveness, mourning, contentment, hope and fear, and sacrifice. This eye-opening look at what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus will encourage you, bolster your faith, and help you rise above shallow attachments to fix your heart on things of eternal worth.

A great read for any deep thinking Christian... provides depth and scriptures as reasons to challenge the life of a believer deeper in their walk. My single quirk was that I don't believe I fully agreed with his view of tragedies that occur in life, instead of portraying the love of God during those times he suggests using it to grow. Sometimes the only way to get through difficulty is to have an unshakable trust in the love and character of God. Looking at the incident as God-sent or placed for our betterment, could instead of growing a person make them indignant towards God. Perhaps Gary would agree with some of the above but it came across shaky in his book, but the angle of the book was toward a person who is in need of God's humility and not God's restoration.Beyond the above it was a great book and I learned a LOT from it.
