Kirstin2 Stars Out Of 5"secondary" only if they REALLY struggleApril 17, 2013KirstinQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 1I purchased this to use with my 8th and 10th grade sons. While they don't necessarily *struggle* with spelling, they need some work in this area. I'm using very teacher-intensive program with 3 younger students (2 of whom are dyslexic), so I don't have time to do something teacher-intensive with them.
I assumed that since this book was for secondary students, that it would have words geared toward secondary students. The words (even the ones at the end of the book!) are on a 1st-2nd grade level!!! One of my sons is almost finished with the book, and words he worked on today were "keep," "sheep," "need," etc.
Now, if your student REALLY, REALLY struggles with some of the rules of spelling, I might recommend this books, but if you're just looking for something to help improve your SECONDARY student's spelling, do NOT get this book.

This book helps him to learn groups of words that have the same spelling. It is not only memorizing a word for a spelling test. His reading is even getting better!

This book teaches one new spelling rule and covers it for five days before teaching the next rule. I personally feel that is one of the best ways of learning. Love this book!
kaylo5 Stars Out Of 5greatFebruary 24, 2012kayloQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I really love this book and I'm using it with my 3rd and 4th grade boys. I like how there is repetition of the rules, reviews, and focus on practacle things they encounter. I am all for learning how to spell through writing and not spelling lists, and this is helping them grasp the mechanics behind our crazy langauge to help them with their self editing.
