Sandra1 Stars Out Of 5LOVED it at first, then it went TOTALLY downhillOctober 31, 2016SandraQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I am using this for my 7th grade struggling speller. After 2 years of very intense remediation, she just needed exactly what this book works on- common phonics and misspellings with reinforcement built in. WE LOVED it until lesson 46. After lesson 46, almost EVERY lesson has TONS (up to 20 or 30) misspelled words, that the student is supposed to correct. My daughter absolutely cannot learn this way. She began to consistently write the misspellings instead of the correct words, some that she had never struggled with. I tried to make a word bank and black out the misspelled ones with a marker, thinking it would only pop up now and then. BUT AFTER lesson 46 it is a consistent theme throughout almost every lesson. This will NOT work for struggling spellers, who would get confused by incorrect spellings.

It's not overwhelming, but has great info for the troubled speller. So thankful that I got Apples for him.
Theresa Little4 Stars Out Of 5Very helpfulJuly 8, 2015Theresa LittleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0My son has been a terrible speller and this has helped him tremendously. I love that there's so much review before each new concept is introduced.
OurhandsfullAge: 35-44Gender: female1 Stars Out Of 5CounterproductiveMay 14, 2013OurhandsfullAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 1Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1I looked closely at this at a local homeschool book fair. I was very hopeful before I examined it but very disappointed with it. This book uses misspelled words to teach spelling. In my opinion as a trained teacher, this method can imprint the wrong spelling in the brain of the student forever and should always be avoided. Even without the misspelled words exercises, the book is very light.
Kirstin2 Stars Out Of 5"secondary" only if they REALLY struggleApril 17, 2013KirstinQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 1I purchased this to use with my 8th and 10th grade sons. While they don't necessarily *struggle* with spelling, they need some work in this area. I'm using very teacher-intensive program with 3 younger students (2 of whom are dyslexic), so I don't have time to do something teacher-intensive with them.
I assumed that since this book was for secondary students, that it would have words geared toward secondary students. The words (even the ones at the end of the book!) are on a 1st-2nd grade level!!! One of my sons is almost finished with the book, and words he worked on today were "keep," "sheep," "need," etc.
Now, if your student REALLY, REALLY struggles with some of the rules of spelling, I might recommend this books, but if you're just looking for something to help improve your SECONDARY student's spelling, do NOT get this book.

Tell us a little about yourself. My husband and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary. We have eight children whom I have been homeschooling for 13 years. I have authored 7 books. Our publishing business, Schoolhouse Publishing, is currently serving not only as a service to other homeschool families, but also as a homeschool project for our children. My husband and I serve two homeschool support groups.
What was your motivation behind this project? With 8 children (6 currently of homeschool age), I had plenty of opportunity to struggle through various learning styles, preferences, challenges, and difficulties. Everything I have developed has been developed around my children. Two of my older boys struggled with spelling. I didn't want to embarrass them by having them go back through elementary phonics - so I developed my own spelling drills. Since we also believe that every subject should be pertinent to their Christian walk and their life purpose, I made sure the lessons I developed would continue to tie their work to Scripture and character development.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My prayer is that older students with spelling struggles will find some relief by using "Apples." I realize that if you struggle with spelling, you will probably always struggle with spelling, but "Apples" will give the struggling student some tools to help compensate and overcome that struggle.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I must give credit to God, my Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ - I am what I am only because of Him. He has helped me to apply educational creativity to each of my children as needed. God is so good. My biggest source of earthly inspiration is my husband. He has believed in me, encouraged me, and even invested in me. I don't deserve such a wonderful man as both my husband and friend.
Q: is there an answer Key for this book?
Yes, the answer key is included at the back of the book.
