Homeschool Specialist Review▼▲
Just before my oldest child was beginning high school, I attended a conference that featured Dr. Jay Wile as a speaker. He was so encouraging about taking on high school-level classes that may not be in our area of expertise. He said parents become fellow learners alongside their children. He really helped take the pressure off! We're there to help our children find their way. A child who learns how to dig in until they arrive at a place of understanding will be equipped for a future as a lifelong learner.
The 594-page hardcover Student Textbook is broken into 16 modules. Each day your student will read a few sections and answer questions. The labs are spread throughout the textbook. Each chapter has a study guide and a summary that will help the student prepare for the module exams. All the answers are included in the 200-page Solutions & Test Book.
The labs will require extra equipment and specimens. Check out the convenient lab kits CBD carries; there are several sets available to make gathering necessary supplies and equipment easy. You'll need a microscope and prepared slides, as well as dissecting equipment and specimens.
KatieGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5FantasticApril 29, 2015KatieGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I really like this curriculum. I feel it's thorough, clear and makes kids apply themselves. The video explanations are a plus too. I think I am enjoying it even more than my kids do, which helps to teach it with enthusiasm. Wish the Biology I took in High School was as straightforward.
Momof2ColoradoAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5My Son's Favorite So Far!March 28, 2015Momof2ColoradoAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0This is a great book. I typically shy away from Christian curriculum, simply because it isn't always as challenging as I feel it should be. In this case, the Apologia curriculum exceeded all of the other biology textbooks that I researched. Challenging enough to compete with any biology curriculum out there, but without the inaccuracies of secular science books. My friend, who is a microbiologist, guest taught a class for me and found the information in the book to be right in line with what she would want them to know at this level. The pictures and experiments are great, and my son loves the way that the authors incorporate truths in the Bible throughout. Looking forward to the other books in the series!
lollipop334 Stars Out Of 5BiologySeptember 18, 2014lollipop33Quality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I read through these other reviews. This book is very well explained and my daughter just loved it.She understood everything perfectly. The only reason why I did a four star was because their weren't almost any real pictures, only diagrams in the Module 5 that I did.I also didn't really appreciate the way the sections were set apart. They were not marked clearly where one section ends and another one begins. So I didn't really like that aspect.Overall all though I really enjoyed the text and the explanation
AnnaFloridaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5I recommend ApologiaApril 22, 2014AnnaFloridaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My daughter took Apologia Biology in 9th grade. She wanted to attend public school the next year and I was a little nervous about passing an EOC with a curriculum that is not developed to the test. She took the Biology in 9th grade and finished in May of her 9th grade year. She started public school the following August and they pulled her out of class in October to take the EOC without warning or preparation (they had originally told her it wouldn't be until December, so she thought she would review closer to that date). She passed the EOC with a 4 out of 5 possible five months after finishing the curriculum. Apparently she learned and retained something. Now the Florida EOC for Biology has a lot of evolution stuff on it, Apologia science does teach about the hypothesis called a theory of Evolution, it doesn't lead you into phases of supposed evolutionary ideas. In other words, Apologia sticks to reliable facts and teaches the fallacies of evolution. My daughter took Chemistry at the public school in 10th grade and made an A, so Apologia must have prepared her well (or public school Chemistry is easy).
ToriMilford, NjAge: Under 18Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Apologia scores....again!!January 24, 2011ToriMilford, NjAge: Under 18Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I've used Apologia for 3 years now, and they've never failed to meet my expectations. Material is easygoing, relaxed, and easy to read. You have what mot textbooks lack: a true conversation with the reader!! You feel as though the author is talking directly to you, and I love being able to relate to what he is saying. Very very pleased, once again. Would recommend any Apologia books!!
Ask a Question▼▲
Q: Did anyone buy a lab kit to go with it? I have a squeamish child who doesn't want to dissect anything. Did you buy/use any of the lab material, and if so, what was useful, and what, if anything, was unnecessary?
If your student is uncomfortable with the dissection experiments, you could forgo them and simply have your student watch them in one of the many DVD formats that are available.
Q: Does this come with an extra test booklet?
Yes, this pack does contain an extra test booklet.
Q: Was wondering if this could be adapted to teach a younger student such as first grade?
This is designed for students that read on a junior high to high school level, so would be difficult for a grade 1 student to comprehend. For younger students, we recommend choosing books from the Apologia Elementary Series.
