Is anxiety "un-Christian"?
Many Christians believe the answer to this question is yes! Understandably, then, many Christians feel shame when they are anxious. They especially feel this shame when well-intentioned fellow believers dismiss or devalue anxiety with Christian platitudes and Bible verses.
Rhett Smith, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, helps us understand anxiety in a new way. Rhett argues that, rather than being destructive or shameful, anxiety can be a catalyst for our spiritual growth. Using Biblical thinking and personal examples, Rhett explains how anxiety allows us to face our resistance and fears, understand where those fears come from, and then make intentional decisions about issues such as career, marriage, money, and our spiritual lives.
Allow this book to challenge your view of anxiety, and allow God to use your anxiety for good.

All too often, particularly in the Christian community, mental health issues such as anxiety and depression are seen as the fault of the sufferer, and that if they just prayed harder and trusted God more, these problems would go away. That is just not the case, but that stigma exists that makes Christians ashamed of their anxiety, and prevents them from seeking help.
However, Smith asks the questions: Can God use your anxiety for good? What if He is using it to speak to us? That can be hard to imagine, but Rhett Smith uses his book to show how God used his anxiety to create opportunities and show him things about himself. It is important to look at your anxiety as a catalyst for growth, and rethink situations that make you anxious.
I did find this book to be helpful and interesting. Rhett Smith has a very friendly writing voice that is enjoyable to read. He uses both personal and Biblical examples to make his points, and each chapter ends with discussion questions, exercises, and a prayer.
The author and I definitely have different kinds of anxiety, so not everything was directly applicable to me, but I still found the book helpful. I gave it 3/5 stars, and I'd recommend it to anyone struggling with an anxiety disorder.

The Anxious Christian by Rhett Smith views anxiety as a catalyst by which God works in the life of a Christian. As the author states
Anxiety is a part of our lives, but we dont have to let it keep us living in a prison of fear or retreating in shame. We have the opportunity to look it square in the face and allow God to use it to transform our lives.
Rhett Smith has impressive credentials, with a bachelors degree in psychology, a Master of Divinity, a Master of Science in Marital and Family Therapy, and is a licensed marriage and family therapist. Yet under all of these thingshe is human. He is real. And he is also a stutterer. What makes this book so effective is that Smith is real about himself, about his struggles, about anxiety, but most importantly he is real about God.
This book is ideal for those particularly struggling with anxiety. Smith even includes an entire appendix at the end of the book for how to get some practical help if you are struggling with anxiety. As far as books for those who wrestle with anxiety go, this book is solid gold. A gem too often overlooked because it is from the lesser-known Moody Publishers.
For those who may not label themselves as struggling with anxiety but may still be feeling varying levels of uncertainty and some anxiety, this book is also very helpful. If you are making a big decision in life or are in a time where you are unsure as to where the Lord is leading, I would recommend this book a thousand times over. It is probably the greatest resource outside of the Bible that I could currently direct you to.
However, if you are a parent, spouse, friend, sibling, child, or otherwise related to someone who struggles with anxiety, this is not the book for you. I have no doubt that there are many other great resources out there for you, but I would tell you to avoid this one. Rhett Smith outlines his own personal struggle with anxiety and Gods purpose for anxiety, but it is meant to be heard by one who wrestles with anxiety themselves.
Overall, this book tore to shreds my views on anxiety. It challenged me in a thousand ways and has influenced me over the past few weeks in a way that I never expected it to when I picked it up off the shelf.

Over the last year, I learned a lot of about anxiety in my life and I looked forward to the possibility that I could apply a book to my life beyond reading and reviewing it.
In The Anxious Christian, Rhett Smith uses personal experience to supplement his professional expertise on the topic of anxiety. The unspoken assumption is that Christians should never worry, fear, or be anxious. Therefore, Christians who live with anxiety may feel ashamed or lonely; they might even feel un-Christian. Many times, Christians are advised to get rid of their anxiety or not think about it.
In contrast, Smith gently encourages his readers to imagine what purpose God might have for the anxiety. He also recognizes that anxiety is multifaceted, both in the factors that contribute to anxiety and the ways anxiety can affect life. Therefore, he gives examples of small steps that can help in the process of understanding anxiety and learning to embrace it.
It is important to note that The Anxious Christian should not be used in the place of professional counseling. But Smiths insights may be a useful tool alongside counseling. The end of The Anxious Christian includes a list of resources as well as recommendations for finding support and counseling.
