While a lot of American churches teach about love and forgiveness, we have neglected an important aspect of any Christians life. When a person becomes a follower of Jesus Christ, they automatically become a soldier in the war between good and evil.
This book will give the reader a good solid foundation for understanding the battle that every Christian will become engaged in. The author tackles subjects such as Does Satan and demons really exist, What exactly can Satan do and what cant he do, should Christians be afraid of Satan and should Christians practice exorcism or deliverance, just to name a few.
While the author tackles these subjects, he keeps the focus on God (where it should always be) and includes lots and lots of scripture. For every question, he gives an answer from scripture, not just his personal opinion.
There were a couple of points that I didnt agree with the author, the first being that he says that Satan cannot put thoughts into a Christians mind. I dont believe that is true, first because of personal experience, but scripture clearly teaches that he is the tempter of the brethren.
The second was the issue of the Nephilim (gen 6:4). While the author presents the case that these were humans born to human women, sired by fallen angels and I have to admit that he does present a pretty good case for this by scripture, there are other points in scripture that point to just the opposite.
With that being said, all in all this was a magnificent book that would enhance any reader library. It is easy to read, the author uses everyday language. It is 224 pages of actual text.
I believe that I will be recommending this book a great deal.
WoofiejoAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Good book but one critical disagreementDecember 14, 2013WoofiejoAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I was excited to dive into this book since this is a topic that's not widely discussed in the current church and too many Christians don't have a clear understanding of Satan and how he can create strongholds in our lives. Satan makes his first appearance in the Bible in Genesis 3 and has an inglorious exit in Revelation 20_but how many sermons have you heard preached specifically on this topic? Hitchcock does a good job of answering a lot of the common questions (and commonly misunderstood issues) regarding Satan, demons and spiritual warfare.
Hitchcock is wise to keep the focus on Christ as the center of all things and not give too much credence to Satan. I personally love his statement "in a broad sense we can know that in some way the presence of Satan and demons serves to glorify God, that is, to make Him known or put Him on display". Even in a study of Satan, we can come to see God and His goodness more clearly by understanding the essence of His adversary.
This is a thorough and well researched book that covers many of the hot topics that are debated (What are Satan's main activities today? Can Satan cause physical sickness and disease? Can Satan perform real miracles? Can Satan kill people? Can Satan and demons be saved? ).
I am still processing some information where I am not in agreement with the author and I would have given this book a 5 star except for this one critical point of disagreement. Hitchcock asserts that Satan can't read our minds (I agree) but also says that he is not capable of putting thoughts in our minds (with the exception of demon possessed people). I disagree. I was always under the impression that thoughts that are not aligned with God's word are suggestions from Satan. If these contrary thoughts don't come from Satan, where do the thoughts come from that we are supposed to be "casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God_"? Where else do people get the idea that to cheat or lie isn't really that bad if no one will notice, etc? If Satan is known as the tempter, how else would he be able to tempt you if he can't put thoughts in your mind?
Because there is so much other good material in this book, I am rating this a 4 star. A complimentary e-copy of this book was provided to me by NetGalley in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
