As a young man, Albert Schweitzer seemed destined for greatness. His immense talent and fortitude propelled him to a place as one of Europes most renowned philosophers, theologians, and musicians in the early twentieth century. Yet Schweitzer shocked his contemporaries by forsaking worldly success and embarking on an epic journey into the wilds of French Equatorial Africa, vowing to serve as a lifelong physician to the least of these in a mysterious land rife with famine, sickness, and superstition.
Enduring hardship, conflict, and personal struggles, he and his beloved wife, Hélène, became French prisoners of war during WWI, and Hélène later battled persistent illnesses.
Ken Gires page-turning, novelesque narrative sheds new light on Schweitzers faith-in-action ethic and his commitment to honor God by celebrating the sacredness of all life.
The legacy of this 1952 Nobel Prize honoree endures in the thriving African hospital community that began in a humble chicken coop, in the millions who have drawn inspiration from his example, and in the challenge that emanates from his life story into our day.Albert Schweitzer seemed destined for greatnessand he achieved it by making his life his greatest sermon to a world in desperate need of hope and healing.
Ken Gire is the author of more than 20 books including the bestsellers, The Divine Embrace and Intimate Moments with the Savior. A graduate of Texas Christian University and Dallas Theological Seminary, he lives in Texas.
Eva P. Scott5 Stars Out Of 5Leaving a LegacyAugust 20, 2017Eva P. ScottQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I had heard of Albert Schweitzer's name, but didn't know anything about him. This book is an excellent biography of his life. It talks about the challenges of working in a world of poverty, superstition, and traditions. It talks about Albert's concerns about the world and how they were exacerbated by the wars. (He had to leave his work for a time because he was considered an enemy during one of the World Wars.)
The book looks at how Albert Schweitzer came up with ideas of how to overcome some of the problems he faced. It teaches that you have to be resilient in the face of problems. It showed how he integrated the three areas of his life in which he had advanced degrees: Medicine, Philosophy and Music.
It also talks about how important it is to support people on the mission field. It also speaks of his love for animals.
If you like biographies, you will like this book.
This book would be excellent for homeschoolers who wanted to study about people of faith (also included his wife's and, later, his daughter's support of his work throughout the book and how they gave up time spent together to continue the work.)
The paperback book is of good quality, and the author is an excellent writer. I felt like I was traveling with Dr. Schweitzer, and meeting the people he met, and being in the clinic. I completed the book in a few days, and sometimes I start a book and don't complete it till later.
I was a homeschool mom for my daughter who has already graduated, but I chose this book recently for me. I love reading biographies of people who dedicated themselves to God.
Albert Schweitzer's legacy lives on through a foundation that was started to help his work, and his influence is seen in the treatment of animals in labs.
The book is 171 pages, not counting the Appendices, Notes, and Selected Biography section. If you want to go deeper into his life, the list of resources is extensive.

When this book came out, I bought it, hoping to get to know him. I was disappointed that the book isnt more comprehensive, longer than it is. I wish Mr. Gire had gone more in depth with who Dr. Schweitzer was, what led him to give up his academic life, and do what he did in Africa. I hope this book will increase interest in Dr. Schweitzer, his work and the legacy he left.
