The back contains her biography: Anna J. Cooper (1858-1964) was an author, educator, speaker, and scholar. Born into slavery in North Carolina, she received a scholarship at age 10 which enabled her to attend school. A bright and eager student, she fought to take classes typically reserved for men. While she was a teacher and high school principal in Washington, D.C., she wrote her first and only published book, A Voice from the South: By a Woman from the South. Promoting the advancement of black women, Cooper believed the intellectual and social progress of women would improve the entire African-American community. She later lectured across the country, advocating education and equal rights for women and African Americans. At age 67, Cooper was the fourth black woman in American history to obtain a Doctorate of Philosophy degree. She continued her career in education and lived to be 105 years old.
