Andrew Murray was born on May 9, 1828, in Graaff-Reinet, Cape Town, South Africa. His father was a minister associated with the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. As a child, he witnessed his father's fervent prayers for revival, frequently reading stories of Holy Spirit revivals to his family. His prayers were answered in 1861 when a powerful spiritual movement swept his congregation.
Young Murray grew up delighting in the Word of God. He became a preacher at age 17 and was ordained to the ministry in the Dutch Reformed Church when he was only 20. His ministry was so spiritually blessed that he quickly gained notoriety and reached positions of responsibility and leadership.
A fervent evangelist, he dedicated his entire life to reaching the most forgotten populations, such as the African tribes of the interior. On more than one occasion he risked his life to carry the Christian message. Author of more than 250 books, he emphasized integral and absolute consecration to God, prayer and holiness. The reader will find these themes interwoven in many of the meditations in this collection. During the last 28 years of his life he was considered the father of the Keswick movement in South Africa.
