An Uncommon Courtship by Kristi Ann Hunter, 2017

The Hawthorne House Series, Book 3

    My Review:

Adelaide couldn't remember a more pleasant outing. Not once did she find herself wishing she could reach for the book she'd tucked into her reticule.

    --An Uncommon Courtship, 114.

A girl after my own heart!!

This is a delightful story of first love ~ learn as you go. Set in an unexpected circumstance, second Hawthorne son, Lord Trent, begins to court his Lady Adelaide.

When was the last time you began and finished a book in one day ~ well if you count 2:20 a.m. a day?! Loved this book. So sweet to see hearts opening to each other for the first time, uncertain of their way and encouraged by those who care about them.

Trent is wanting to give Adelaide the social standing she has never had before and not to be overlooked. She grows in assurance and receipt of who she is; kind, giving, and able to have a voice in what concerns her. Standing up for herself she is respected and able to move forward in the life the Lord has for her.

Fear of man will prove to be a snare,

but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.

    --Proverbs 29:25

I liked the growth of this story, the trust they both have continuing forward, despite turmoil around them. Very well-written, this whole series brings family together in support and understanding. Good communication and I especially liked that Adelaide knew whom to go to for help and direction. Trent is well-taken as he turns to his brother and brothers-in-law. His sisters include Adelaide and assist watchfully in her coming out in society. Gossip is quenched being immersed in Truth.

How abundant are the good things

that you have stored up for those who fear you,

that you bestow in the sight of all,

on those who take refuge in you.

    --Psalm 31:19

An excellent book that kept my attention! Lord Trent Hawthorne and Lady Adelaide are both well-written characters who I enjoyed even when irritated with them for decisions they made! I've enjoyed all of the Hawthorne House series but this just may be my favorite! An Uncommon Courtship can be a stand alone but reading the earlier books first will give you more background. I recommend this book to others!

An Uncommon Courtship is part of the Hawthorne House series written by Kristi Ann Hunter. It is a delightful series with each book reading well on its own. That being said, I would recommend reading all of the books in order to avoid spoilers as many of the main characters in previous novels show up in the subsequent stories.

An Uncommon Courtship is uncommon for an regency novel in that Lord Trent and Lady Adelaide are essentially forced into an arranged marriage. Many novels based on this era entertain couples breaking the 'arranged marriage trend' and instead marring for love. Realistically, many couples married for wealth and position and not for love during this time period - particularly those who were part of the London's elite ton.

Lord Trent and Lady Adelaide fall prey to her scheming mother and find themselves married to a stranger. Lord Trent has witnessed his siblings' love matches and desires the same for himself. However, what does loving your spouse really mean? What does love actually look like? He hardly knows his wife, but does that mean he can't love her? I really admired the way this novel looked to the scriptural definition of marital love and dug deep into what loving your spouse actually looks like - even when you don't feel the emotional part of it.

I really enjoyed how this novel broke away from couples falling in love based on physical attraction, high emotions, and simply lust. Instead, you get a first hand look at what true love in action actually looks like. There are some surprisingly deep and insightful moments.

As a word of caution, I would recommend An Uncommon Courtship for adults or older teens. While there are no specific bedroom descriptions, this books does go into more detail than is common for most Christian romances and I would hesitate to hand this to a young teen.

Thank-you very much to Graf Martin Communications and Baker Publishing House for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Despite his charm, wealth, and good looks, Trent is a top-notch gentleman above reproach. Trent's most endearing qualities are his chivalry, humor, innocence, faith, and purity of heart.

Quiet Lady Adelaide Bell is a little on the quirky side but she's the last woman anyone would expect to need a marriage of convenience to preserve her reputation. Fortunately, marriage should give Adelaide some much-needed distance from her mother's constant schemes.

The Hawthornes make me want to travel to regency England for a visit! I adore this fun, Godly, supportive, loving family!

So, I have read some reviews that felt this book went to far into certain details that are part of marriage, and I definitely respect and value the opinions of those that were concerned with this. I, however, loved this story and it is, so far, may favorite book of the series.

What really captivated me about this book was the awkwardness of these two people. Nothing went smoothly for them. Even though Trent was valiant and offered marriage to Adelaide, he didn't really know how to proceed from there. He had built up an ideal of what marriage should be and anything other than a love match became a severe disappointment. He definitely did not handle things well when he and his bride first arrived in London.

What became clear to me as I read on, was that both Adelaide and Trent desired a loving marriage, but didn't really know how to interact with each other. And Adelaide was also very new to society, having been ignored by her family all of her life, while they pampered her sister.

Even when Trent and Adelaide began to embrace the physical side of their marriage, things didn't go well. It almost seemed that for every step they would take forward in their relationship, something would happen to set them back. I, personally, loved seeing them work through all of these things and felt that they had built a very strong foundation for their lives together by the time all was wrapped up at the end of the book. I so loved the moments when Trent came to Adelaide's "rescue" toward the latter portion of the story. They were swoon-worthy moments, indeed. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series and then moving on to other books by this author.
