Griffith, Duke of Riverton, likes order, logic, and control, and he naturally applies this rational approach to his search for a bride. He's certain Miss Frederica St. Claire is the perfect wife for him, but while Frederica is strangely elusive, he can't seem to stop running into her stunningly beautiful cousin, Miss Isabella Breckenridge.
Isabella should be enjoying her society debut, but with her family in difficult circumstances, her uncle will only help them if she'll use her beauty to assist him in his political aims. Already uncomfortable with this agreement, the more she comes to know Griffith, the more she wishes to be free of her unfortunate obligation.
Will Griffith and Isabella be able to set aside their pride and face their fears in time to find their own happily-ever-after?
CozyWriter'sDen5 Stars Out Of 5Amazing bookMarch 22, 2018CozyWriter'sDenQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I wish this book didn't have to end. I love all of Kristi Ann Hunter's works, and her most recent novel, "An Inconvenient Beauty" is no exception. Furthermore, I lent out this trilogy to a friend of mine who is an avid reader. After finishing the series, she told me that these books were her favourite that I've ever lent her (and I've lent her MANY books).
Throughout the first two books, I've gotten to know Griffith, the Duke of Riverton, in his role as protector and guardian of his younger siblings. His loving indulgence of his family, keen intelligence, immovable sense of honor, and unshakable integrity have made him the backbone of the family and the series. I strongly suspected that this book would be about his quest to find a bride, and I was not disappointed.
Ironically, Griffith's story does not start out with love at first sight like with his siblings (sorta...). At first, I was a little shocked, but after I thought about it a little I realized that falling madly in love would be completely out of character for this honorable gentleman. Instead, he faces the women of London with a mental checklist in hand, and systematically sorts through their attributes and characteristics... much in the same way you'd pick a new house! With his emotions firmly put aside and his mind ruling his decision, Griffith sets forth to win his decided upon bride. Of course.... nothing could go wrong with this plan, now could it? Poor Griffith... what follows is a bit of a disaster as the purely logical duke finds the women in question not behaving at all like he intended, and then of all things, his pesky heart totally gets in the way of his practical mind.
I won't talk about the chosen bride in this book, because I wouldn't want to give away the grand surprise of who actually ends up being married to Griffith. I will say she is an absolute delight and I was cheering for her the whole time.
I would highly recommend not just reading, but buying and adding this entire series to your collection.
Thank-you to Graf Martin Communications and to Baker Publishing House for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion....thank-you also to Kristi Ann Hunter for being such an amazing writer and bringing these unforgettable characters to life.
Crystal5 Stars Out Of 5Loved This Ending to a Great Series!January 29, 2018CrystalQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I hate to see this series end, but this final installment of Hunter's Hawthorne House series was a fitting end with the story centering around elder brother, Griffith, Duke of Riverton. I was so amused with Griffith in this story! In all of the other books, Griffith has been stoic, serious, and calm. In An Inconvenient Beauty he becomes a completely besotted, lovesick fool! His revelations that he is an "idiot" when it comes to love and the subtle humor he displays at times with Isabella presents a completely different side of his character. His complete and utter adoration of Isabella and the emotional turmoil he experiences because of it was touching. And who knew he was such a romantic! I loved how the book ended tying together Griffith's rules for dancing. So loved this last novel and absolutely will miss these characters who break all molds when it comes to English high society!
This review contains my own thoughts and opinions regarding this literary work. I have not been compensated by the publisher or author in any way.
Heart2HeartVictorville, CAAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Makes me remember what falling in love with the right man feels like again!January 13, 2018Heart2HeartVictorville, CAAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Downton Abbey fans, Jane Austen diehards, want to get hooked on an incredible series of novels? Check out the Hawthorne House Series by Kristi Ann Hunter and you will be as hooked if not more than you are on your favorite area of interest surrounding the traditional Regency Romance genres! An Inconvenient Beauty is book 4 and the possible final one in the series and wraps up the love interest surrounding Griffith, Duke of Riverton! Now that all his siblings are married off and beginning their own lives, Griffith realizes as the oldest, he must find a way to settle down and produce an heir for the families wealth to be inherited to. Only he isn't about to settle for just anyone that society deems is the right and top choice for him.
His entire family has married for love and not necessarily based on where a suitable lady fell on the social ladder in London. He wants someone who isn't really thinking she might be able to offer anyone, that way she won't necessarily have to work at being the best at all the social graces that come from marrying a Duke, one of the highest honors after royalty that is. With it comes a responsibility and a certain standard that must be maintained to keep things in proper order. Griffith believes he has found a suitable wife in the wallflower Miss Frederica St. Claire who is now going into her fourth season with no potential matches. She would make the perfect wife, because no one would even compete with her plain and homely looks and she wouldn't be out to impress him with things he isn't looking for. Now all he has to do is convince her by simply asking her to dance. Even all of London's society has been wagering on just who he might settle with.
Most think that Griffith will settle for the most beautiful and society's pick of the top females. In fact, her cousin Miss Isabella Breckenridge is working her way to doing just that with all the eligible young and older men vying for the honor to court her. He isn't at all interested in her but in Miss St. Claire instead, but everytime he calls on her, she is unable to communicate and sends signals that she isn't the slightest bit interested in the most eligible and wealthy bachelor in London. It seems Miss St. Claire has her own interests in a young man who has returned from the war, a solider whom she thought dead. Now it seems that Freddie will do all she can to push the Duke's attentions off to Isabella instead and often times it is under the most trying of situations, but then again, Isabella isn't interested in the Duke, because her Uncle wants her to focus her attentions on the members of the House of Commons to sway their vote for an Apothecary Bill he is pushing to be passed. He promises that he will take care of Isabella's family, simple sheep herders in North Umberland, but will anyone discover the true meaning behind Isabella's actions?
I received An Inconvenient Beauty by Kristi Ann Hunter compliments of Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley. This has been such a dream to enjoy every single novel in this series and trust me, you will want to read them in order to understand all the relationships within the Duke's family and how each came to marry the one they have chosen to spend the rest of their life with and ones that they will LOVE first and foremost over what society deems is acceptable. I LOVE Isabella's character because she isn't interested in the Duke for marriage, so it keeps her guard down and she can be the person she is on the inside without having to fake her way through being proper and with that Griffith falls for the true woman she is over the lady she is acting like. Well worthy of all 5 out of 5 stars and only wish there were more to look forward to in this series. There are some historical facts that were incorporated in this novel that are revealed at the conclusion of this novel in the Author's Note section.
KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Awesome conclusion to the Hawthorne House seriesDecember 27, 2017KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Swoonworthy Regency Alert! Dust off those fainting couches and grab your smelling salts because at long last it is the Duke of Riverton himself who is destined for romance. And what a deliciously decadent though bittersweet read this one is. That's because An Inconvenient Beauty is the last book in the Hawthorne House series. I'm currently inconsolable over this dastardly fact. Luckily I'm still basking in the warm glow of Regency euphoria brought upon by this spectacular grande finale.
No worries if you haven't read the first three books -- this easily reads as a standalone. But, if you are a Kristi Ann Hunter fan, you will love her all the more for the exquisite details she brings to this last story. Griffith's siblings and their spouses are all present and accounted for. In fact, the author has done a tremendous job of weaving diverse personalities together in an incredible series climax.
We have Griffith, the staid duke and eldest son, burdened with leadership at a very young age, actually seeking out his younger siblings for advice. Riotous scenes with all the brothers (I'm including in-laws here) giving him such a hard time along with some sage advice on courtship. And at his most dire moments he seeks out the women in his family where his woes are spun into comedic masterpieces as all things female clearly befuddle him. I laughed and cried and raged my way through the pages of this book.
Griffith is determined that his brain will lead his heart in his quest for a wife. To this end he has spent a year -- a year! -- studying and researching a certain lady to ensure suitability. Because he firmly believes that: "By applying a little logic to the situation, he would have no problem finding love with someone who wouldn't throw his life into utter chaos and put him through complete turmoil before finding his way to happiness." (p 65)
Yeah, right, cue the chaos! And it comes in the form of his 'intended's' cousin. Conflicted and intrigued, Griffith finds himself drawn to Isabella who is the exact opposite of his 'ideal wife' candidate. Witty dialogue, heated...make that scorching...glances across a crowded ballroom and all the machinations of polite society in the early 1800s make this a Regency page-turner of the highest class.
BethErinILAge: 25-34Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Exceptional Regency romance with humor and heartDecember 5, 2017BethErinILAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Eldest brother Griffith is an ever-present character throughout the series yet he mostly keeps to the perimeter and rarely has more than a few words to spare. I admire his practicality and problem-solving prowess.
Isabella is eager to do ANYTHING to ease her familys pressing financial burdens, despite the protests of her conscious. Isabella draws strength from her relationship with her cousin.
Each installment in the Hawthorne House series has its own unique vibe with a comforting mixture of tough topics and humor. The family setting allows readers to be lovingly invested in each character over the course of the series. I highly recommend this entire series which is firmly planted on my all-time favorites shelf and I am eagerly anticipating a new series from this author!
I requested the opportunity to read this book through the publisher. The opinions expressed are my own.
