They've been best friends for years, but as high school ends, Zane Beck can't help but look at his Amish neighbor, Lila Lehman, with different eyes. Her controlling father sees only one future for Lila, though, and arranges for her to be courted by an upstanding young Amish man. When Zane sees the two together, his plans for the future crumble, and he impulsively enlists in the Army, following in his father's footsteps. However, the passing of years and the distance between them isn't enough to halt their now hidden feelings for each other. If being together used to be difficult, it's now impossible, especially with the Amish opposed to war. Zane's service takes a dramatic turn when he's sent to Afghanistan. Being on the front line and the reality of taking a life has him questioning whether he can continue to serve or not. But all choices have consequences--both his and hers. With Lila preparing to marry another, will these one-time sweethearts ever find the life together that they both still long for?

Pam BurkePotosi, MOAge: 55-65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Sweet romance . . . with complicationsMay 31, 2016Pam BurkePotosi, MOAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Leslie Gould has once again done a great job of crafting a sweet romantic story under very complicated circumstances in Amish Sweethearts, the second book in her Neighbors of Lancaster County series.
While containing many of the expected elements of an Amish story, Amish Sweethearts is not a cookie-cutter, only the predictable outcomes kind of story. Much of the story revolves around questions that have no easy answers as Zane, Lila, and their friends and family deal with issues of love and war. Joining them on their complex journey makes for a very engaging read.
Fans of great Amish fiction will surely enjoy this story. And I'm certainly hoping there is more to come in this series!
Thanks to Bethany House for providing a copy of Amish Sweethearts in exchange for my honest review.
KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Couldn't put this one downMay 24, 2016KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Not your average Amish story. Gould takes her characters on an unexpected (and complicated) journey towards self-discovery and I was right there with them every step of the way. I loved all the little unpredictable things about this story. I mean, it could have gone in so many different directions with varying outcomes and I never knew what was going to happen next. Loved the thrill of the unknown and taking the opportunity to savor a scene while letting my imagination run free to create my own scenarios before continuing to read. Love being that invested in the lives of my character friends!
If you read Amish Promises, the first book in the Neighbors of Lancaster County series, you will already be acquainted with the Becks and the Lehmans. It's not necessary to have read the first book in order to enjoy this one, but you will have more of a sense of history between the two families if you have.
So -- Zane. Stubborn. Proud. Closed-mouthed. Not to mention the impulsive-lets-not-think-this-through mentality that crops up at the most inconvenient times. And Lila. She's the glue that holds her ragtag family together. So determined to do the right thing that she often forgets that she has choices too. There's nothing more awkward than a childhood friendship on the cusp of something so much bigger. Do the risks outweigh the benefits? And then there's the whole Amish/Englisch issue. So many delicious dilemmas for a reader to lose herself in!
I really enjoyed the author's insights into the Afghanistan war. She tackles hard questions with grace and respect and that whole aspect of the novel really got me thinking. It's a conundrum Zane finds himself in the middle of -- and adds a whole new dynamic to his relationship with his Amish neighbours.
A riveting read fueled with love and faith and the unending hope that comes from being part of God's plan.
Laura HiltonHorseshoe Bend, ARAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Amish SweetheartsMay 18, 2016Laura HiltonHorseshoe Bend, ARAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3AMISH SWEETHEARTS is the second book in Ms. Gould's Neighbor's of Lancaster County series. Fans will want to read the first book, Amish Promises, since this series does not stand alone.
I wanted to like AMISH SWEETHEARTS better than I did. I looked forward to reading Zane's and Lila's story. Zane grew up to be a wonderful young man, kind, considerate, and serving the country, like his dad and his dad's best friend, Charlie. He did end up second guessing his decision, but I'm sure that is normal for most young people in the military, especially those who are deployed for ongoing war. Lila moved on (sorta) loving Zane but being courted by Reuben, and she wouldn't talk to Zane when he was home, but then sulked when he respected her boundaries.
Zane and Lila were apart with no communication most of the book. It was a good read, Ms. Gould is a talented author, and I would call this women's fiction more than romance.
SunnieUSAAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great story!April 17, 2016SunnieUSAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Amish Sweethearts was book 2 in the Neighbors of Lancaster County. Unfortunately, I didn't read book 1, but I did get to read book 2. This contemporary Amish story is set in the year 2010 which is a time period we can all relate to, of course. I did feel that it was great as a stand alone novel sans book 1 as well.
The story of Lila and Zane was very interesting and has kept me quickly reading and hating to put the book down. Zane is "Englisch" and Lila is Amish. They have feelings towards one another but realize those feelings shouldn't and couldn't come to much because of Lila's faith in her religion, her loyalty to family and the fact that she was already baptized into the church.
As a result Zane signs up for the military and leaves Lila who was being courted by Amish man Reuben, much to the happiness of her family. But was she happy?
The book is really good. I enjoyed it so much. Definitely an A+ for this one. It is the first book of this author that I have read. Will be reading more!
PennyMindingMomAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A Great ReadApril 12, 2016PennyMindingMomAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Amish Sweethearts" is a book two in the series of "Neighbors Of Lancaster County" by Leslie Gould. It can be read as a stand alone book or part of the series.
"Amish Sweethearts" tells the story of Zane Beck and Lila Lehman. Zane Beck moved to Lancaster County as a young boy with his family. His next door neighbors were the Lehmans. Zane Beck who was an Englishcer, became a very close friend of Lila Lehman who was Amish. Zane and Lila felt that nothing would come of how they felt for each other than friendship. Can Zane and Lila who come from two different worlds find love and have a future together?
The story portrays the different cultures between the Englisscers and the Amish. I found that Zane and Lila had a lot of struggles in their lives when they tried to live on their own terms. When they turned their situation over to God that was when they found peace and contentment. It also shows in Gods timing he puts certain people in the right place at the right time. If you just stop and prayerfully listen he will lead you into the direction you should take.
It is a book when you start to read you just want to keep on reading and not put it down until you come to the and. The author, Leslie Gould, draws you into the peoples lives and you go through their joys and struggles with them.
I would highly recommend the book as a must read and would give it a 4 thumbs up.
