Thirty-four chapters each include five daily lessons which take approximately 20-30 minutes each. A short reading is followed by critical thinking questions; an exam is given on the last day of the week. Background information, Bloom's Taxonomy-based questions, concepts, biographical sketches, historical debate updates, worldview notes, and history overview components work together to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of historiographical material from a Christian perspective.
Lessons are one-page and easy-to-read with black-and-white photographs integrated throughout; critical thinking assignments are given in the bottom corner. This student book contains only the lesson summaries and assignments; tests and other information is in the sold-separately American History Teacher's Guide. 400 pages with timeline, softcover. Jobee344 Stars Out Of 5Yes and NoFebruary 3, 2015Jobee34I love the overall concept and flow of the material in this textbook. My daughter enjoys the essay answers as opposed to just filling in the blanks of a worksheet. While the curriculum does a great job of making history personally relevant, it assumes an advanced vocabulary and biblical literacy that is beyond most high schoolers. I have to provide Scripture references and outside sources to help her understand certain concepts. We will stay with it because there is much to be gained, but it isn't ideal for the student who wants to work independently, or for the parent who wants quick, concrete answers to grade.
RollTideGirlAlabamaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5June 4, 2012RollTideGirlAlabamaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleRespected Christian educator, Dr. James Stobaugh, offers an entire year of high school American history curriculum in an easy to teach and comprehensive volume. American History: Observations & Assessments from Early Settlement to Today employs clear objectives and challenging assignments for the tenth grade student. From before the birth of our republic to the principles of liberty, American history trends, philosophies, and events are thoroughly explored. The following components are covered for the student:
Examinations of historical theories, terms, and concepts
History makers who changed the course of America
Overviews and insights into world views.
Students will complete this course knowing the Christian influences that created a beacon of hope and opportunity that still draws millions to the United States of America.
James Stobaugh has done an amazing job of creating an American History curriculum for high school students (grades 9-12) that covers all aspects of American History from Christopher Columbus landing to the political debates that have shaped our world today. The Student Book itself is almost 400 pages and contains 34 chapters. Each chapter is divided into 5 daily lessons (each lesson is one page) which should take about 30 minutes to complete each day. Each daily lesson contains a short reading text and is followed by critical thinking questions. On the last day of the week, there is a comprehensive exam.
I loved that this curriculum is filled with photographs, charts and lots of visual material to help your child visually see the history come to life. I should mention that all the photographs and such are in black and white (there are no color pictures at all) but that in no way takes away from the material being taught. Plus, it is helps keep this curriculum extremely affordable too.
The accompanying Teacher's Guide is 192 pages (again all black & white) but it includes answer keys, exam keys and a grading scale for the exams found in the Student Book. It is easy to read, easy to understand and a very useful tool in teaching this material.
While our children are not quite ready for this level of American History curriculum, it will be a very valuable asset in a few years when they reach high school age. It provides a comprehensive overview of "new world" history while presenting the material from a Christian perspective. This curriculum is available through New Leaf Publishing Group. The Student Book retails for $29.99 and the Teacher Book retails for $14.99.
