I found the book enjoyable to read. Author is open about most of his own biases as he presents varying views. This retired layman with an antiquated Bible minor from OBU found this a nice counterpoint to "faithless" critiques... highly recommended to retirees.
The New American Commentary series is one of the best on the market. Which is why I was surprised at the lack of depth this volume failed to go into.If you are looking to dive deep into the Scriptures you might be better served in going with a different commentary on Mark.
Generally, an excellent, scholarly commentary theologically, biblically (including appropriate and insightful cross references), and practically. It tends to be too emphatic with textual criticism and the excess of this could be displaced by more practical application.
