Story Behind the Book

“Twelve years ago, I became romantically, though thankfully not sexually, involved with my then-pastor. This resulted in the church’s devastation and a great deal of harm to both of our marriages. But God used the difficult lessons I learned during that arduous time to reshape my thinking about marriage and to plainly show me that the man I always wanted was the one I already had. By using my own story of failure and forgiveness as a backdrop, this book illustrates how our heart’s desire is often found no further then the big lug lying next to us in bed each night!” –Paula Friedrichsen

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm the wife of Jeff Friedrichsen (the big lug I refer to often in my book). I'm the mother of two wonderful kids, and the proud owner of a beagle/Chihuahua/terrier mix named Sweet pea.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Did you know that even failure can have value in God’s economy? When a life has been redeemed by His grace, when a marriage has been restored by His goodness, it must be told. And for that reason, this book begins with my story of failure almost fifteen years ago. But bear in mind, the point of my story is not that I failed. We all fail at times, in one degree or another. The point is that I got back up. Emotionally bruised and spiritually shaken, I took steps to seek forgiveness and restoration from God. He did forgive, and He restored me—and so much more! He gave me a message to share with women. He gave me a passion to see them protected from making the same mistake I did. He infused within me the longing to see women’s eyes opened to the truth that their heart’s desire is often no further away than the big lug lying next to them in bed each night. You may not be married to Prince Charming. But then, no one is—except Cinderella! In a world that idolizes the airbrushed fantasies found on the cover of People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive issue, we must sit up and notice the unique qualities of the guys we are married to.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope to protect married women from the need to look outside their marriages for love. To help them learn to rediscover and delight in "first love", revisiting the passion that drew women to their husbands in the first place.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I was inspired by Shaunti Feldhahn author of the bestselling, "For Women Only". Shaunti was kind enough to review my book and said, "I started reading Paula's book on an airplane trip yesterday, and I wanted to stand up and shout, 'You go girl!' right there in seat 20C. From the first few pages of her piercing honesty, I was hooked. I'm convinced that her message is God's loving answer to women who desperately need hope in their marriages."
