But we don't often associate these words with the Bible. In "Alby's Amazing Book," illustrater Catalina Echeverri does an extraordinary job capturing this excitement and showing children that the Bible can be exciting too.
The book presents Alby, a squirrel, as an explorer who loves encountering adventures in the books he reads. Of course, in Alby's favorite book, there are all sorts of stories. But his favorite book is special in that he knows the Author. It is written to him with love, from God.
This accessible book is for young children but can be appreciated by upper elementary aged kids as well. The illustrations are engaging and invite closer scrutiny. Older children will catch that Bible verses and words form the background for many of the stories Alby encounters.
This book will make an impression on young minds, and hopefully will lead many of them to pick up Alby's favorite book (the Bible) for themselves.

GazpachoClare, MIAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Alby goes on fun adventures with his amazing bookNovember 10, 2014GazpachoClare, MIAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Alby is a little squirrel who loves stories and going on adventures. While other squirrels are chasing each other and playing games, Alby's active imagination carries him to far away places. Best of all, he loves the books which whisk him away to explore. Above all the books he enjoys, there is one special book he loves most because he knows the one who wrote it. In this amazing book, all the stories are true. The stories are exciting. And he knows the author of this very special book loves him too.
Catalina Echeverri illustrated this children's picture book in her traditional whimsical style. She uses vivid colors on some pages, with muted earthy tones on others. In the scenes where Alby is in an adventure, interacting with the characters, she places words from the special book within the background objects, not to read but to indicate where the adventure originated. Best of all, the illustrations complement rather than detract from the main message. This story is based on an original work by Mary Elizabeth Blume.
I have always enjoyed perusing picture books with young children including my own, especially when the visual appeal is as meaningful as the storyline of the book. Visually exploring a book for its hidden treasures is what a good picture book is all about. This book has a wonderful message about the Bible. I think young children and parents alike will love it.
