Editorial Reviews

I absolutely loved this compilation of stories. Each writer has their own unique style which compliment each other. I really like all of the stories of Faith and adventure.

I really enjoyed reading each story. Each one was a bit different because of the different authors, but they all tied in well together. The authors wove the story of Christ and salvation into each story without it coming across as preachy. The romance was sweet and heartwarming.

Love reading and this book is a steal for a 5 in 1 book. Only problem is print is tiny! If you have bad eyes this would not be for you. I knew it would be smaller print but this is smaller than I expected BUT its a great book to read.

The Alaskan Brides Collection is five historical fiction story written by five four amazing authors. One author writes two of the stories. The stories in this collection the authors, and a blurb about each story are as follows:

Golden Dawn by Cathy Marie Hake_. Living on her twin brother's Alaska claim, Meredith Smith regularly refuses marriage proposals that give her little hope for being more than a maid and a cook, but it is the neighbor, Ian Rafferty, who offers only Christian friendship who intrigues her most. Will secrets from her past bar her from any chance at a loving marriage?

Golden Days by Mary Connealy__..Amy Simons may be small, but she is tough and strong enough to survive Alaska's worst—if only she can reach her father, a trapper in the wilderness. Brandon Rafferty hopes to escape the grief of losing his wife, but he didn't expect to find another needy woman along the way, another woman who will depend on him for strength.

Golden Twilight by Kathleen Y'Barbo___ Feeling exiled to her brothers' homes in the Alaskan frontier, Fiona Rafferty's one goal is to get back to civilization to enroll in medical school, not to find a husband as her father wishes. Can she make room in her dreams to include a man with a dark past—a man like Tucker Smith?

A Light the Window by Tracie Peterson___. Julie Eriksson is finally fulfilling her dreams of bringing medical care to the Eskimos of Nome. Persistent marriage proposals from Sam Curtiss make her fearful of having to give up her dream and disappoint her deceased mother. Then an outbreak of diphtheria banishes such troubles from Julie's mind. The only cure lies hundreds of miles away, across the frozen frontier.

Destiny's Road by Tracie Peterson___ Beth Hogan loses her husband in World War II and returns to Alaska with her two sons only to find their remote village overrun by soldiers and civilians coming to build the Alcan Highway. Then she finds a second chance at love when she meets August Eriksson.

All of these stories are so well written and so wonderful, I wouldn't even try to pick a favorite! Each story features a young lady with struggles of her own, trying to fulfill her purpose in life. I fell in love with each of the ladies, and I read each of these stories in one setting. And this is the awesome thing about this collection. The stories are pretty short, so if you don't have time to read a full long book, you will love these. Or if you are like me, and just want something different and quick to read, you will love this took. I just can't say enough about how awesome these stories are, and I don't want to tell anything much, because I will give them away! But as you can see, the stories are written by four of the most amazing authors, so the stories have to be just as amazing!!

And I can't leave out the book cover because it is beautiful!! I love the ragged edges, the cover and inside flaps are so pretty, I have this and others in this series on my coffee table. This is truly a book that you will want others to see in your home, and it makes a really good conversation piece!!

I received this book from the Barbour Books to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 55

This is a gathering of five novellas by four different authors with each author contributing one story to the collection with the exception of Tracie Peterson who contributed two stories. None of these stories are newly copyrighted works. They all are copyrighted 2007 and prior, but I didn't realize that so I was disappointed when I started reading the first story and discovered I'd already read it! I'm not a big fan of novellas because I just start to get to know the characters and get involved in the plot and the story is over. To me, the stories seem not as well-developed and the ending abrupt.

The first three stories take place in the late 1800s, with the third story taking readers into the 1900s. The fourth story takes place in the 1920s and the fifth story in the 1940s. Each story follows a budding romance, but before that the story follows the lives and faith challenges the main characters must face. Whether it be the day-to-day challenges of putting food on the table and surviving the extreme conditions in pioneer Alaska to the death of a spouse, to choosing between a calling and a spouse, to questioning why things happen when they do and what purpose do these events serve.

The fortitude of these women to survive in these extreme conditions was impressive. It sure made me glad I was not born in any of those times as I'm a big fan of modern conveniences! Their faith in God was inspiring to read about, but again these stories fell flat for me. I just didn't have enough time to connect with these remarkable women before their stories were over and I was on to the next one, not really being finished in my heart with the previous story_I wanted more details. I will say though that these stories were easy to read and as each story was about 90-95 pages in length, I could read one, put the book down and then when I had time again I could pick the book up not feeling lost in a story. All-in-all I would say this is just an average read.

    The Alaska Brides

This is a collection of five full novels; All interestingly written. I laughed through my first one - it set a great mood for the whole collection. Combine a stubborn Irishman and hardheaded proud Texan and your poor belly will hurt from laughing. Meredith and Ian's story is very sweet. Made me wish for Alaskan cold wild life. Tucker brings great counteract to their love, threatening but not frightening. I loved it. But it is also the reason I didn't like Tucker's love story. He deserved so much more then the author gave him. If it were up to me I would have made his story a highlight of the whole collection giving him all the love and respect he missed out on in his hard life. But more later.

Braden hurt and burdened by his wife's death in childbirth has decided that the only refuge will be by leaving Oregon farm life to go to Alaska to live with his brother. Amy a Russian and Eskimo girl hasn't heard anything from her father and after she is pushed under the running horses she decides that she needs to go and see her father never even bothering to heed God's message to wait. But as the both are headed in the same direction she crosses paths with Braden and of course with trouble that just won't stop following Amy. Stubborn worse than his brother and also grieving Braden doesn't yield an inch to Amy, she is driven by the mystery of her father's supposed death. Only when risk is running too high and danger is way too close does Braden realize that he can't lose Amy. But God is good and there is a reason we should heed His message. I loved their story. It stirred all kinds of emotion and that made it rich.

Tucker and Fiona's story should be sweeter. They still got their happily ever after but it would have been better if it came earlier. All that junk about The Right Thing is messed up in this book, more than messed up. This book is the reason I'm giving it a four.

Julie - a graduated nurse is finally going home to her northern Alaska. Home sweet home. But after being held up in Doctor's office she is driving home alone. And the blizzard hits. A kind stranger comes to her rescue and in turn needs her to dig him out of the river. Only later does she realize that this stranger is a long time friend of her brother's August. Sam is smitten from first sight and even though Amy is responding to his kisses, her confusion about her future and the plans she has been making are about to rip Sam's heart in a million pieces. I loved the details about the quest to bring the Diphtheria antidote to Alaska. I was so taken I read authors notes for the actual facts about the journey it took.

It is the Second World War. Hitler's cruelness is affecting even Canadian and Alaskan citizens so far from the actual fight. Beth left a widow with two toddler boys is struggling to make a go of life without her beloved Gary. August- Amy's brother, is disappointed in God more than ever because God not only left him a bachelor but also blocked his path into the Army to fight in the world war. But then there is the threat of Japanese attack on Alaska and Navy is pulling anyone willing to help build the Highway from America through Canada and into Alaska. A great challenge. When Beth's boys wonder to the river and Phillip falls in, a whole new chapter opens in Beth's and August lives. Amazing love story. A story, that required courage and faith and a miracle, to put these two together.

In all these books authors did an amazing job describing Alaska - its charms and its chclenges. The historical facts from Gold - Rush to World-War. I loved it. Wilderness life, city life, navy camps _ these books take you everywhere. And it amazed me. I knew so little about Alaska before this book now I feel like I lived there.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from Barbour Publishing, through NetGalley, in exchange for my honest opinion.
