Pearson Learning's AGS World Geography and Cultures curriculum for 6th grade students is part of the AGS Publishing history & social studies curriculum from Pearson Learning.
The chapters in the student text move geographically from continent to continent. Interesting sidebar features are integrated throughout, including biography features, "geography in your life" segments, "spotlight stories" that relate history to geography, "writing about geography" assignments, "geography in today's world" sections that highlight current concerns, "celebrations" that highlight different holidays, and others. Objectives and new vocabulary for each chapter are included at the beginning of each chapter; individual lessons as well as each chapter end with review questions. Clearly written chapters are complemented by the many photographs of people and landscapes of the world, as well as a number of maps. 614 pages, hardcover.
The student workbook complements the student text with a worksheet for each lesson; worksheets are clearly labeled with the textbook pages they accompany. A variety of exercises, including short answer, word-bank, multiple choice, crosswords, and matching questions, are included. 96 non-reproducible pages, softcover.
The teacher's edition includes reduced-size reproductions of the student text, as well as the student workbook. Answers to the review questions in the text are provided in the margins; however, line-listed answers for the activity book and mastery tests are grouped together in the back. "Chapter-at-a-glance" introductions provide the page numbers, topic overview, and resources (activities, tests, outlines, etc.) required for the entire chapter. An introduction to the concept is provided along with questions to ask (and their answers). Activities, lessons with scripted questions, ELL/ESL strategies, notes on the sidebar elements, tips for differentiating instruction based on learning styles, and vocabulary/pronunciation helps will help homeschoolers construct a well-rounded lesson. 681 pages, hardcover.
Homeschoolers Please Note: The teacher's guide includes reduced-size reproductions of the unit mastery tests and quarter-size midterm and final mastery tests. These are intended to be printed off of the "Teacher's Resource Library" CD, which is not included in this homeschool kit. References to this Teacher's CD, as well as online elements and an audio CD are integrated throughout the teacher's guide, but are not currently included by Pearson in this kit, nor is Pearson currently selling a homeschool kit that includes these components.
