Believing that African American religious studies has reached a crossroads, Cornel West and Eddie Glaude seek, in this landmark anthology, to steer the discipline into the future. Arguing that the complexity of beliefs, choices, and actions of African Americans need not be reduced to expressions of black religion, West and Glaude call for more careful reflection on the complex relationships of African American religious studies to conceptions of class, gender, sexual orientation, race, empire, and other values that continue to challenge our democratic ideals.

This is the only definitive collection of writings from the African American faith community that includes such a wide variety of perspectives; womanist, liberation, historical, sociological, theological, philosophical, etc. This scholarly volume will reward repeated and sustained study for pastors, seminarians, and scholars. It remains to be seen if the information presented can be effectively transformed into praxis in the African American church community. That process will be of paramount importance as pastors and educators construct church and seminary curriculums. Required reading!
