Series: Imagination Station
Mr. Whittaker built the Imagination Station to teach kids about history, but it malfunctioned and will only let Patrick and Beth inside. In this book, they must capture the villain Hugh and send him back to his own time period. They must also recover Mr. Whittakers ring, which Hugh stole.
After a close encounter with a bear, Patrick and Beth meet David and follow him to the Israelite camp, where David accepts Goliath's challenge to battle. Meanwhile, Patrick and Beth try to help the Israelites by thwarting Hugh's plans to change history. The book ends with a cliffhanger sure to get kids begging to read the next book. A prologue explains the events in the previous installments.
Similar to the Magic Tree House books, the Imagination Station series teaches kids about history through the eyes of time-traveling children. But unlike the Magic Tree House, Patrick and Beth trust in God, not magic. The premise of the Imagination Station comes from the audio drama "Adventures in Odyssey," but kids do not have to listen to the program to enjoy the books.
The series' website, www.theimaginationstation.com, provides a vocabulary list and a place to type in the code word from the book's puzzle. The correct code word will reveal a prize. Written for early grade-school children, Showdown with the Shepherd can be enjoyed by all members of the family. Alexandra Mellen, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

While looking for the ring, they encounter dangers involving Goliath and a bear. As they see the story of David and Goliath unfold, they learn about trusting God even when it seems like failure is sure. This is a great book for young readers and not only does it have adventure that will appeal to kids, but it also has great Christian truths and historical facts incorporated into the story.

This time Patrick and Beth get to meet the young shepherd boy, David. They get to live through the Biblical story involving their new friend, David and Goliath. They, also, had another meeting with troublemaker, Hugh. He just doesn't give up.
I liked this book. It was enjoyable to "meet" David.
thecraftyhomeAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5July 1, 2014thecraftyhomeAge: 25-34Gender: femaleShowdown with the Shepherd is the fifth book in The Imagination Station series. The Imagination Station is Mr. Whittaker's invention from the famous radio show Adventures in Odyssey. The first books in this series all have a common thread of a bad guy named Hugh that the cousins Patrick and Beth are following through history. This book brings them to Biblical times and the story of David and Goliath. But with Hugh there trying to mess with history what will happen?
This book series is a fabulous substitute for the hugely popular Magic Treehouse books. If you are looking for something that can help your kids learn about history but from a Biblical perspective and without the magic this is the series for you. My 9 year old loves them but they are more at a 1st-2nd grade reading level. I highly recommend getting this whole series for your children.
