Gutierrez speaks from the heart of Christ as he writes of those trapped in the mire and mud of modern life. Liberation Theology should be alive in the modern world as it was when Jesus walked upon the plains of Palestine and freed those contained within the constrictions of the Jewish beliefs. The aim of God was not to condemn but to free, thus man was not made for the Sabboath but the Sabboath was made for man. The reason for that day was that persons should be set free not that they should be held up to ridicule and bound by their life situations. The child begging on the street, the woman bound in prostitution, the man slaving away his life for a desperate living is not to be restricted by the popular or normal way of structuring society but raised by the love of Christ made manifest in Christ's people. Thus Christ preached and continues to preach liberation of humanity.
