"Shelley Gray is a wonderful storyteller, and A Texans Promise captured me from the first page. This endearing love story is so rich with detail, I felt like I was traveling alongside Vanessa and Clayton throughout their incredible journey. Clayton is the hero every woman dreams of, and I loved watching Vanessa grow from a scared girl into a strong woman. This is a wonderful start to this new series. Highly recommended." - Beth Wiseman Best-selling author of the Daughters of the Promise series

Little Miss Bookworm2 Stars Out Of 5An interesting plotFebruary 28, 2017Little Miss BookwormQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The premise of A Texan's Promise by Shelley Gray is captivating, but it fails to deliver. After one fateful night, Vanessa Grantturns tobest friend Clayton Proffitt for help. During the journey across the West from Texas to Colorado, Vanessa grows both as a woman and in her faith. Clayton is a honorable hero who struggles with his feelings for Vanessa throughout the story. He feels honor bound toprotect her and his rolein the Civil War makes him feel unworthy of her love. Romance develops slowly and tenderly between the couple. Their fragile relationship and past promises are tested when Vanessa's stepfather comes to claim her.
The first half of the novel kept me hooked with suspense. After Chapter Twelve, the plot seems to fall apart. Clayton and Vanessa's thoughts become repetitive in regards to their relationship. Instead of building on their "marriage of convenience," their insecurities play a prominent role. Also there is a big build up for the villainousPrice Venture in the opening pages, but he becomes one-dimensional and his demise is predictable. Overall, I felt like the chapters were choppy and did not connect fluidly together.
A Texan's Promise hasa combination of faith and hope is infused into the damsel in distress plot. While it did disappoint me, I do plan on reading the next two books in the "Heart of a Hero" series.
Awesome Read4 Stars Out Of 5Good Christian BookFebruary 13, 2017Awesome ReadQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I liked this book, it had a great story-line. I did feel that this book dragged on a bit and I wish there was more romance between Vanessa and Clay. Some of the book was a bit far-fetched as well. Overall though, I would recommend, especially because of how the Author wonderfully incorporated Biblical principles and values. I do think if you are looking for a mostly romance book, this might not be the one though. That would have been the cherry on top.
DyscypleSaint Albans, WVAge: 35-44Gender: female1 Stars Out Of 5TypicalNovember 18, 2015DyscypleSaint Albans, WVAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 1Value: 2Meets Expectations: 1Well, this is your typical "Christian" romance book/series. The characters are completely nonsensical and ridiculous, the story line is totally predictable, the writing is poor, scripture is seriously misinterpreted or taken out of context, characters live pretty much as they please yet are still "Christians," and the gospel is virtually absent from salvation.
I really do not understand how or why these writers think this makes for a good book! Every single book in this genre is the same! There is hardly ever any deviation. I cannot believe how stupid the characters are. As soon as something happens, about a dozen inane questions are asked--questions that they should know the answers to. Ugh, it's just ridiculous. I'm going to try to read the next two books in the series to give a review. I'm hoping they are better than this first book.
I do not recommend this book to anyone.

Whew! I absolutely loved the first book in this new series from this new author to me. I was looking around for new books to read and was granted the opportunity from a publisher to read the second book in the series. When I found out there was a book one and three, I bought those books and have been planted in a comfy chair lost in a story that speaks volumes of sometimes waiting for others to find the Lord or hear from Him.
Here are two characters with very different backgrounds. Clayton Proffitt is the foreman at the ranch owned by the father of Vanessa Grant. After her father's passing, within a short period of time, her mother rushes into a new marriage because of the overwhelming responsibilities of running such a large ranch. The decision to marry quickly turns from one of what appears as happiness to one of horror experienced by Mary, who is Vanessa's mother, Vanessa and her younger brother Miles. The villain, Price, is a cruel man who would go to the ends of the earth to take what was never rightfully his to own!
Through the pages the audience will begin to see the past scars both Vanessa and Clayton have, as well as what each hopes the future holds. For the present time, the main concern is keeping Vanessa's whereabouts unknown to her step-father. Miles, Clayton and Vanessa are characters with different paths before them and each must learn to love and trust the Lord with the burdens their hearts carry.
I cannot wait to begin book 2 in the series to see what happens with a couple of the minor characters stories that weren't the focus of book one. Readers who enjoy westerns stories that have the themes of friendships, dependency on the Lord, and belief in prayer will eat up this book! Such a great work of fiction did I enjoy and am thankful Shelley Gray took time to write and share. No one will be sorry to pick up a book that explores the human heart so deeply along with the facets of family and faith. The Heart of a Hero Series is one that will be on my shelf available to reread again sometime in the future, but also to share with a friend or two. Grab a copy, a comfy and quiet place then enjoy getting lost in the pages of A Texan's Promise!
