Publisher's Description

Jenny Higgins is certain falling in love and finding a husband are matters of the mind. Her heart has other plans.

After their parents died, Jenny felt responsible for seeing that her two younger sisters were well taken-care of. Tipped off by an article naming Rocky Creek the town with the highest number of eligible bachelors, Jenny rolled into this Texas town with a clear objective: find suitable husbands for her two sister and then start fresh somewhere far, far away.

Jenny believe that women who fall in love at first sight often wish they'd taken a second look, so she diligently begins to follow all the rules set forth in her handy manual on how to land a husband.

But while Jenny is interviewing the less-than-promising candidates, her sisters are falling in love the old-fashioned way--with men of their choosing. And the longer Jenny stays, the more her sense of control slips away. The town isn't living up to her expectations, her sisters are rebelling against her practical choices, and soon her own heart starts to betray her, as US Marshall Rhett Armstrong stirs emotions in her that weren't part of her plan.

To relinquish her control to God and calm her restless spirit, she'll need to give her foregone conclusions about marriage, love, and faith.

In Margaret Brownley’s latest Rocky Creek Romance, A Suitor for Jenny, forgiveness and love are the driving forces behind many of her characters’ actions. Set in 1881 in Texas, Jenny Higgins invades the town of Rocky Creek in order to procure good husbands for her younger sisters, thus securing their futures. This, however, causes a great disturbance among the local townspeople, riling women and rousing men.

The book proceeds from the Higgins sisters’ first arrival during the early summer to its September end. Jenny quickly begins assessing the available bachelors, requiring them to go through a rigid process of applications and interviews before allowing her younger sisters Mary Lou and Brenda to be courted. Jenny focuses on the men’s possessions rather than their characters to ensure that her sisters will never go without food or medicine, as they have in the past. Jenny disregards social norms by barging in the local saloon, arguing in public with men, and creating other outrageous moments causing the town marshal, Rhett Armstrong, to become intimately familiar with Jenny and her stubborn antics.

The young marshal has a haunting past similar to Jenny’s that keeps him from being happy. Both main characters feel unworthy of love because of their mysterious pasts. Throughout the novel they learn God wants to set them free of the guilt, shame, and pain. Jenny and Rhett both realize God has a plan for their hard hearts, ultimately to find freedom by giving control to God.

Brownley unites the story with different perspectives from many of her characters to create an interesting and captivating story. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel’s plot and the development of characters, as well as the funny situations and the ensuing action. Most adult women and young girls who like watching romantic comedies would find this great entertainment because of its stylized plot. This book is mostly for young women and has some PG material because of various kissing scenes. So, moms, this book is a great way to start conversations about dating with your preteen daughter. – Michelle Archer, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
