Lukas De Wilde has enjoyed the life of fame he's won--until now, when being recognized nearly gets him killed. Everyone wants the key to his father's work as a cryptologist. And Lukas fears that his mother and sister, who have vanished in the wake of the German invasion of Belgium, will pay the price. The only light he finds is meeting the intriguing Willa Forsythe.
But danger presses in from every side, and Willa knows what Lukas doesn't--that she must betray him and find that cypher, or her own family will pay the price as surely as his has.
KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Such an exquisitely beautiful book!February 21, 2018KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Such an exquisitely beautiful book! And the title tie-in is just one of the many details that makes this a masterpiece of a story. There's depth of character, an inspiring faith thread and plenty of intrigue -- not to mention the kind of toe-curling romance that will leave your fainting couch in need of reupholstering 'cause you're going to wear it out with all the swooning you'll be doing over Lukas.
Reformed rake. Squeal! Relentless in his pursuit. Squeal! Gentle and patient in that pursuit. Squeal! And full of humour. Squeal! Every time he grins...thud! Thud! THUD! Hence the broken springs in the aforementioned fainting couch. And Willa is so brusque with him but that doesn't faze him one bit. Like I said...relentless. My tummy is still doing back-flips.
But as delicious as the romance is, there's a whole lot more to this story. We're right at the beginning of World War I and there's plenty of sinister afoot. The story flashes back and forth between Lukas and Willa in Wales and Lukas's sister, Margot, in occupied Brussels. Tension builds as various characters work at cross-purposes that place the De Wilde family in ever increasing danger.
And then there's Willa's deception. My heart hurts just thinking about it. Because for all her bravado, she's protecting a hurting heart. Walled it up in a defensive maneuver and she has no intention of letting anyone, other than her family, in.
And what a family! This is the second book in the Shadows Over England series and if you've read A Name Unknown, you'll recognize the rowdy clan Willa claims as her kin. No worries if you haven't read the first book, this one will serve as a sweet introduction. Just love the whole premise surrounding this series and the overlap of characters. I'm hoping every one of her adopted siblings gets their own story. That will keep Roseanna M.White's adoring public in good reads for a long time to come. And that makes me super happy.
Katelyn S. BoldsAge: 18-24Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Quick Witted and Fun to Read!February 19, 2018Katelyn S. BoldsAge: 18-24Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5A thoroughly enjoyable book, A Song Unheard continues the Shadows over England series that follows a family of street urchins (think a nice version of Charles Dicken's Fagin gang) who steal to provide for themselves. They've gained such a reputation as clever thieves that they are recruited by a mysterious "Mr. V" who needs them to steal important documentation for him at the beginning of WWI.
The first book in the series followed Rosemary, an uneducated but passionate reader who poses as a librarian in the home of a potential traitor to the British crown. Her job--to find proof of his ties to Germany. But what she uncovers is a lot more surprising...
The second book follows her "sister" Willa, an untrained but gifted violinist who plays by ear. Her task is to steal a cypher from a famous violinist and the son of a brilliant cryptographer. He immediately falls head-over-heels for her, and proposes marriage, but Willa's only in it for the mark.
While it's hard to say that any romance is completely original or that "you didn't see it coming", this book just strikes me as very unique and well-crafted. Roseanna White's characters are all so brilliant; you feel like you are learning about cyphers, music, and lock-picking right along with them.
There is a lot of quick wit and unexpected plot twists that keep you on your toes, while still providing a happy ending and a satisfactory smile on the face of the reader. Highly recommended for people who like classics and historical fiction. It's a nice twist on both.
I would recommend both books in the series, although I would suggest starting with Book 1 if you plan to read it. Book 2 does give away the ending of Book 1, even though it follows a different main character.

LeAnneGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Amazing Book!February 16, 2018LeAnneGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This has been an amazing book! I loved the mystery and the story plot, it kept me guessing and turning the pages quickly. It was hard to put this book down, and I could not wait to see how everything would end! I loved the writing style, and the characters could not be any better. If Roseanna M. White was not already one of my top favorite authors before, she sure is after this book!
I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers for my honest review. The opinions are my own.
gatorade635Midland, PAAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5AmazingFebruary 13, 2018gatorade635Midland, PAAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5From the moment we first met Willa in book one of this series I knew her story was going to be amazing. And I also knew that it was going to take a special kind of man to break through the fortress she had built around her heart. I was definitely right on both accounts!
Willa fiercely loves those close to her but to say shes selective about who she lets close would be an understatement. She was abandoned as a child and as a result she does everything possible to make sure she never gets hurt like that again. But despite her tough exterior she has a kind heart and will do whatever is necessary to help those she loves.
I absolutely loved Lukas. Hes always been known as a ladies man but we get to watch his transformation into a hero you cant help but love. And I adored the way he seemed to see through to Willas true self and the way he was constantly trying to win her over with his playful flirting!
There were so many layers to both of these characters and it was so much fun getting to know them and watch them fall in love.
I enjoyed seeing more of all the fun members of Willas unconventional family and I really loved Lukass sister Margot! I was so excited to hear that shed be getting her own story in this authors next series.
The setting of this story was also fascinating. It takes place at the beginning of World War I and explored parts of history I hadnt really heard much about.
In short everything about this book was amazing and beautiful and I was enthralled with every page!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts are my own
