A Return of Devotion by Kristi Ann Hunter totally blew me out of the water. While this was not a story of adventure and danger, it was filled with the best character development I think I have ever read and the character tension carried throughout the story was real and personal. I identified with Daphne in ways I've never identified with any other character, and William was equally well-developed. Seriously, this surprised me with how well it held my attention. More than one night while reading this I woke up in the middle of the night wondering about the characters. I should have just picked the doggone book up and finished it instead of trying to fall back asleep.

If you are an introvert who struggles to be around people or just in search of a book with characters who sweep you away and become real people, this is it. This is a story that will speak to your soul and leave you thinking about it for weeks after.

I have read all the other Kristy Ann Hunter books. I love this author. A Return of Devotion was a wonderful read. I am so glad we get to learn more of Daphne's story. In A Defense of Honor (Haven Manor #1) you fall in love with crazy wacky Kit, Daphne's best and only friend. I laughed so much I had tears streaming down my checks. In this second novel we once again fall in love, but this time with both Daphne Blakemoor and her new employer William, Marquis of Chemsford. Their relationship was so endearing. Add a few unexpected surprises that add to the intrigue of this story. I found myself laughing, crying and setting on the end of my seat. Can't wait for the next book in this series.

A Return of Devotion is a poignant novel of second chances. Daphne and William both struggle with their past mistakes. But they also struggle with looking ahead to the future instead of worrying over their pasts. The misunderstandings they work through as Daphne tries to hide her secrets from William lead to some humorous moments. But through these we see the strength of Daphne's character, even if she is a bit misguided. Daphne can be shy and reserved, but she has no problem trying to protect her son. I loved the way Hunter brought that out.

And I loved William's sense of honor. In fact, William had me swooning more than once. His housekeeper baffles him but he doesn't want to let her go because he's afraid she won't find another job. Who wouldn't love a hero like that? And his response to Benedictwell, I don't want to give away any spoilers. But it made me respect William even more.

I read this book in a day, and it wouldn't surprise me if you did, too. Hunter packs so much in it. I kept holding my breath as one revelation came after another, and just when I thought things were settling down, Hunter throws a curve-ball that had me reeling almost as much as Daphne.

"She knew God had forgiven her. She knew she was a valuable person, that she'd gone on to do something good with her life." But had Daphne forgiven herself?

"He really didn't care about going back to the town today, but unraveling the mystery of his housekeeper was more appealing than anything else he could think to do." William was ready to make some changes in his life. He moved to his newly inherited country estate, determined to be a different kind of Marquis than his father. Determined, in fact, to be the opposite of the kind of man his father was. When he meets Daphne, the housekeeper of his estate in Malborough, he is intrigued.

What is going on at Haven Manor. Who are these women managing his household? Who are the children he employs? It's all a mystery that William needs to figure out so he can know how to proceed with settling into the manor.

Sqqqqueeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!! Swoonworthy Regency alert! Clear off your fainting couch (I know you've been piling books on it) and lay in a supply of chocolate...and perhaps a tissue box or two and be prepared to be dazzled by the sweet perfection that is A Return of Devotion.

I listened to the audible version and loved the narration. Something about a British accent stirring my imagination up into a vivid frenzy! I usually listen while I work around the house or exercise but I finally gave up any pretense of work and just sat entranced. There's something about being limited by the narrator's pacing that's both exhilarating and exasperating because I had no control over the timing. Mind you, it made me savor every sweet word all the more so even though my tummy was tied in knots a lot longer than if I'd read this book, I really did enjoy the prolonged shivery delight the audible version brought me. :-)

Hunter does justice to this classic Regency genre. Delightful details, exquisite banter, the machinations of a class conscious society and...most important of all --- a hero to swoon over! (cue that fainting couch!) And it will do double duty as a soft landing for when you laugh yourself silly over the riotous humours moments. And then you'll be reaching for a tissue when an unexpected heart-stirring scene sneaks up on you. Or the whole box as the faith thread builds. Forgiveness and self-worth and the courage to hope for the future God has designed for you. Hearty sigh! The Epic-iest of all epic Regencies. :-)

And yes, this is the second book in Kristi Ann Hunter's Haven Manor series and I somehow missed the first book! What??? I need to sharpen my Regency spotting skills! Don't know how A Defense of Honor slipped right past me. Even so, I had no trouble enjoying this second book. In fact, it was kinda fun because I was just as befuddled as William about all of Daphne's secrets and I had fun uncovering them right along with him.

If you love to be enthralled by a good Regency romance, A Return of Devotion is definitely the book for you.
