When Marlow accidentally discovers and mails one of the letters to her unwitting confidant, Miranda is beyond mortified. And even more shocked when the duke returns her note with one of his own that initiates a courtship-by-mail. Insecurity about her lack of suitors shifts into confusion at her growing feelings for two men--one she's never met but whose words deeply resonate with her heart, and one she has come to depend on but whose behavior is more and more suspicious. When it becomes apparent state secrets are at risk and Marlow is right in the thick of the conflict, one thing is certain: Miranda's heart is far from all that's at risk for the Hawthornes and those they love.

Kristi Ann Hunter weaves an intricate web of deceit, danger, and romance in The Noble Masquerade that will thrill readers with every page turn! Fearing she may become an old maid, Lady Miranda Hawthorne finds herself pouring her heart out in letters to her brothers close friend, Marsh, a habit she started in childhood to vent the woes of her mothers lady in training sessions. Her letters were never meant to actually be shared with the Duke of Marshington- they simply were to serve as a place Miranda could shed her ladylike behaviors to express her true feelings about life. However, when her brothers valet accidentally mails one of the letters- and the Duke responds to Miranda in kind- her world is turned upside down not only by the embarrassment she feels at her secret letter writing being exposed, but also by the intimate correspondence the two begin exchanging on a regular basis. To complicate matters, Lady Miranda finds herself being drawn to her brothers valet, Marlow, even though she knows a romance with a servant is not possible.
In the meantime, the Duke of Marshington- or Ryland if called by his first name- increasingly desires to formally court the passionate, intelligent woman who has been writing him letters, but he knows his own secrets may not only put an end to Mirandas budding affection for him, but may also put her life in danger.
As Ive said in many reviews before, I love it when a novel has a twist in the plot. Although the secret Ryland harbored was obvious fairly early in the story, I love the way Hunter used this secret within the plot for both those who were privy to it and with those who were not. Lady Mirandas reaction to learning the information was classic, as was Rylands disclosure of it endearing! Humor was laced throughout Miranda and Rylands interactions that was quite amusing! And when danger threatens, Rylands courageous pursuit of the villain allows both his heroism and his very deep love for Miranda to shine through. Great read!

Melissa5 Stars Out Of 5Loved it!February 6, 2017MelissaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Love! Yes, I loved this book.
I started reading this series with the 2nd book and had to go back and read the first. There is some overlapping and it was so interesting to read this first one knowing what would happen in the second.
Miranda's struggle with her heart held me captive. I couldn't wait for her to discover the truth but I was also worried about her reaction, maybe she wouldn't be happy when she discovered what was really going on.
I adored Marlow, a hero in every way.
Kristi is wonderful author who has written a fabulous series. I can't wait to read the third (soon).
Debbie WilderSalinas, CAAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A delightful historical romantic comedy!June 10, 2016Debbie WilderSalinas, CAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is Kristi Ann Hunters debut novel. She has really set a high bar for herself with this one. She does have a prequel novella out that is available in eBook only.
The characters are incredibly well developed and easy to connect with. The variety of personalities that are included are very entertaining.
Lady Miranda Hawthorne grew up with her mother constantly pulling her aside to give her lady lessons in proper conduct. She hated these little lectures because they constantly constrained her very nature and emotions. But they were needed to help her live in polite society. Throughout the book when she is struggling with wanting to act one way and knowing it is wrong she hears in her own mind her mothers voice and the lady lesson that applies. I found each of these tidbits very amusing.
Interspersed through the book is a bit of mystery and intrigue. The book is set in 1812 England and they are currently at war with France. There isnt much actual talk about the war but it is a backdrop for the story and there is mention of it and how it affects those in high society. Some of the more quirky characters are connected with the danger and intrigue.
I received a free copy of this book through The Book Clue Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

I totally enjoyed reading about the humor behind the characters and the trouble they could find themselves in. It is not the typical regency romance. This is the first book in the Hawthorne House series. I can not wait to read the next one!
