This book portrays some of the material hardships in the aftermath of war or adversity, but it does not have any mention of relying on God, or Christianity. Mom sacrifices to provide for her daughter to get a brand new coat and the daughter thanks the sheep. The book does mention job loss and housing loss, and shortages of everything including food- but these essential needs are not really contemplated. This book does NOT help children learn about facing challenges except to expect your parent to sacrifice for you. With all of the challenges the world is facing our children need to be assured they can trust in God- and sometimes yes, our lives are not perfect- but meeting the challenges with God's help is very rewarding.

This is a well written story about the hardships faced after war and the determination of one mother to supply her child with all she needs. It leads to much discussion with your child after reading it. It is a very enjoyable read. I purchased it for my 8 year old daughter and she is also doing a book study with it. She really liked the book too.
