Product Description

Seven years ago, Moriyah was taken captive in Jericho and branded with the mark of the Canaanite gods. Now the Israelites are experiencing peace in their new land, but Moriyah has yet to find her own peace. Because of the shameful mark on her face, she hides behind her veil at all times and the disdain of the townspeople keeps her from socializing. And marriage prospects were out of the question . . . until now.

Her father has found someone to marry her, and she hopes to use her love of cooking to impress the man and his motherless sons. But when things go horribly wrong, Moriyah is forced to flee. Seeking safety at one of the newly-established Levitical cities of refuge, she is wildly unprepared for the dangers she will face, and the enemies--and unexpected allies--she will encounter on her way.

Author Bio

When she is not homeschooling her two sweet kids (with a full pot of coffee at hand), Connilyn Cossette is scribbling notes on spare paper, mumbling about her imaginary friends, and reading obscure, out-of-print history books. Although a Pacific Northwest native, she now lives in a little town near Dallas, Texas. She can be found online at www.connilyncossette.com.

A Light on the HillMorivah had no chance to be married, she was branded with the mark of the Canaanite gods in the Battle of Jericho. However, no she has found the right man but instead she is made to run. She goes to a city of refuge but along the way there are even more.

After being branded during the battle of Jericho, Moriyah has had no prospects for marriage--until now. She hopes to please the man, but things go horribly wrong and she is forced to flee for her life. Seeking safety at one of the Levitical cities of refuge, she is unprepared for the dangers she faces, and the enemies--and allies--she encounters on her way and within the city.

This is the first book I have read by this author, though I see she has written others. If her others are anything like this, I know I will love them. She has such a way of telling a story. I felt like I could feel the shame, fear and hope that Morivah felt throughout the book, plus I kept hoping that she would find peace and love.

From my past reviews, it is obvious that I enjoy reading books set in Biblical times. I would recommend this book very highly to others that enjoy this kind of book. It will become a favorite that will be read again and again.

I was given this book by Bethany House Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

"How could I do anything but trust an Almighty God who somehow seemed to care for even a branded, convicted manslayer like me?" (312)

Fascinating doesn't even seem to cut it for Connilyn Cossette's A Light on the Hill, the first of her new series, Cities of Refuge. The emotions this reader felt for Moriyah's journey was all over the place. Filled with anxiety for her trials, love for her tenacity, admiration for kindness and yes, even wonder sometimes for her faith. Wow. Pass on the tissues, a cozy blanket and a hug-able cushion, I can read Connilyn Cossette's stories anyday, anywhere.

I love how like the author's debut series, Out of Egypt, A Light on the Hill is not a retelling, but rather a new conceptual story based in a biblical setting. Through her stories, you can tell the author did a lot of research and created an interesting way for readers to understand the time and culture. A Light on the Hill didn't dwell on the setting, but the setting itself did tend to jump out and stand on its own. I love the story of faith despite circumstances and tribulation that tests it. I love the strength and development we see in each of the main and minor characters. I love the slow burn of a romance that had me waiting, swooning, hoping and wanting to see to its conclusion.

". . .the man reminded me all the best of my father and my older brother mixed together - an honorable warrior who could protect me and a natural kindness that gave me hope that he someday see me, and not my scar." (55)

If there was one thing that I had to say captured me and compelled me to move forward page after page was our main character Moriyah. I guess it makes sense given the fact that she is the featured character in A Light on the Hill. I love the quote about seeing her for her and not the scar that so many defined her with. I can relate on that note and it just gives a personal connection that stayed with me. Plus, her personality and desire to thrive despite her experience radiated a light of hope through the pages. Faith is easily said, but not always easily obtained. Yet, there's encouragement of it that isn't forceful but shown. In all, A Light on the Hill carries its own beacon of directional light shining straight to the Bible and our Lord.

"If there's something I've learned in my life, it's that one can either endure hardship or thrive within it. . .I think. . .you will find that there is purpose in all of this, that somehow the ashes of all this present grief will become fertile soil for something you cannot yet fathom." (67)

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. This is my honest opinion.

First of all I have say I feel in love with the cover right away! I have to say this has to be one of my favorite covers of the biblical books I have so far. I have read several of Cossette's books and I have become a fan of her's and I didn't know if she could top her other books BUT she did!

My heart grasped for young Moriyah because she was branded for something she wasn't. The people in her town bullied her for the branding she received (which angered me!). In this book you will be on a rollar coaster of drama, actions and love.

I loved the characters and how Cossette describe the time era - it was perfect! It felt like I was part of the book.

If you are a regular reader of biblical books or just came across this one I say it's a must read! I highly recommend it! This is the first book in the series of the Cities of Refuge and book #2 will be coming out Oct 2nd.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House for my honest review.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Here is my honest review.

I do not typically read Biblical historical fiction so this was a new venture for me. I am so thankful for the publisher sending me a copy to review. I've only read one other book in this genre so I wasn't really sure what to expect. While I think I am fairly well-versed in the Bible, particularly well-known history, I do not consider myself to be advanced in Biblical knowledge so I always hesitate to know if the book stays true to history.

What I really enjoyed about Moriyah's story is that she is a fictional character set during the time after Joshua has led God's people into Canaan as they begin to settle the lands that they have conquered. I was able to enjoy the characters and immerse myself in the daily living on the period which brings a whole new element to my understanding of that time when I actually go back and read the Bible.

I also thought Moriyah was endearing as a character. She has certainly faced hardship and judgment which has further led her to close herself off from being an active part of society. I could relate to how the fear of what people are saying about you can hinder our relationships, with God and each other. Seeing the journey that Moriyah took to accept circumstances that were beyond her control and reach out to boldly grasp a future for herself was inspiring.

This is the first book in the Cities of Refuge series published by Bethany House. Goodreads shows that the second book in the series is expected to be published sometime in 2018. I am interested to see the next installment and read further works by Connilyn Cossette.
