Jarred My Senses Near the End
December 30, 2013
From the beginning, I did not like the book. I know that seems strange in light of my rating, but keep reading so that you may comprehend my reasoning. This book was extremely hard for me to follow. I had to keep reading so I could understand which portions were flashbacks and which parts of the book were happening now. I also struggled to keep the characters straight, but in time, it all made sense.
On the positive side, I am highly pleased that there is no profanity and no sex scenes. In addition to this, the Christian message is there (even though there are some rather ambiguous passages), and the tenets of the gospel are delineated more than once. For these reasons alone, I could certainly recommend this book. The filth of the world is definitely there, but the redemptive work of Christ is seen throughout.
Until I was within twenty pages of finishing the book, I have to admit that I did not care for the story. I did not connect with the characters, and was beginning to look at the page numbers rather than the content. However, the author jarred my senses when facts began to leak out concerning the more unusual facets of the story. I wish she had put more of this "grit" in the story earlier, and maybe in her next book she will. She has the makings of an amazing author, and I would certainly want to read another of her books. This book is short enough for me to recommend to those of you who like Christian books and/or mysteries.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
In, A Legacy of Lies, author Stephenia McGee pens an intriguing story with a blend of romance, the supernatural, and faith. Unlike the typical "romance" novel, many characters play a part in this multi-threaded story, leaving a broader scope of impact.
The characterization is well done, the setting is clear, and although as I mentioned above there is that element of supernatural, at no time did the story seem too far-fetched to be believable.
If you are a person who loves to try to put the pieces of a puzzle together, I think you'll enjoy digging into this title.
When I first started reading this novel, I fired off an email to the author (an online friend) and told her that this was a fantastic book. And I was serious. She starts with a murky mystery and it doesn't let up until the very end. In fact, as I read the last few pages, I realized what this book was: this is an Inspirational Gothic novel. Think Castle of Otranto and The Turn of the Screw in a cowboy romance. Fan-TAS-tic.
The story follows Jim, a ranch hand with a history he refuses to discuss, Sarah, a frustrated student sinking in debt, Jonathan, a billionaire with a heart of steel and Elizabeth, a lost soul who can't seem to remember who she is or why she keeps coming back to a strange little shop that is always open in the middle of New York City. They are all linked in one tragic tale of love, rejection, redemption and supernatural intervention.
This book has it all: a nice quick plot, a massive castle, cowboys, a dark mystery, a cold seductress and a story that leaves you thinking about it long after you've finished the book. If you're looking for one good read, I definitely recommend this book.
Christian author Stephenia H. McGee introduces us to a stressed pre-med student during college finals. Sarah needs change in her life, and finds it as she follows God's leading to touch the life of a man troubled by frightening dreams and visions. This sweet romance is spiced with suspense, complex family relationships and redemption. The horror of what the lies produce is as real as the relief of redemption.
California, Virginia, Montana, Colorado - all the settings are vividly described backdrops for this well-woven story. It is a Montana Cowboy story like none I've ever read. Along with the horses and dude ranch and cattle drive, the heroine experiences a journey to find the life and love God intends for her.
The author keeps you reading the next chapter and the next as she skillfully introduces each character, then weaves them into a story that will keep you guessing until the very end. I highly recommend Legacy of Lies as a sweet but exciting read.
