Publisher's Description

In this intriguing novel of romance, mystery, and clever disguise set in Victorian England, a young woman investigates the murder of her own father.

After the mysterious death of her father, Miss Gillian Young takes a new job as the principal costume designer at the renowned Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. But while she remembers her father as a kind, well-respected man of the Police Force, clues she uncovers indicate he’d been living a double life: a haunting photograph of a young woman; train stubs for secret trips just before his death; and a receipt for a large sum of money. Are these items evidence of her father’s guilty secrets? His longtime police partner thinks so.

Then Gillian meets the dashing Viscount Thomas Lockwood. Their attraction is instant and inescapable. As their romantic involvement grows, Gillian begins to suspect even Lockwood’s motives. Does Lord Lockwood truly love her? Or is his interest a front for the desire to own her newly inherited property? And what should she make of her friend’s suggestion that Lockwood or men like him were involved in the murder of her father?

Soon Gillian is convinced that her father has left evidence somewhere that can prove his innocence and reveal the guilty party. But someone wants to stop her from discovering it. The closer she comes to uncovering it, the more menacing her opposition grows. With her life on the line, Gillian takes on an ingenious disguise and takes on the role of a lifetime to reveal the true killer—before it’s too late both for her and for those that she loves.

I don't know if Jane Eyre was the first in what we would come to call the genre but it certainly is the quintessential Gothic romance. What attracts us to these over-the-top stories? But it's true, there is nothing like sitting down to read one of these deliciously dark tales complete with damsels in distress , mysterious heroes, secret hiding places, romance, and betrayal. Finding a Christian one is not the easiest at all. Enter Sandra Byrd's adventure-filled Daughters Of Hampshire series with ALL of the qualifications necessary for a good Gothic romance.

I had a great time reading A Lady In Disguise, trying to guess who the villain or villains were, puzzling out motivations, and reveling in the misty and secretive atmosphere of 1880's Britain. As much as I was able to figure out some things there were still plenty of surprises that kept me intrigued and engrossed.

A Lady In Disguise is only the second book I've read by this author, the other being book one in this series, but I was quite pleased to find that they can be read standalone. Now I can't wait to read book two, because, believe me, I don't intend to stop with only these two titles. Sandra Byrd definitely has me hooked!

(I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

"He had died there, . . . . . But his death had been no accident. No indeed."

Following the mysterious death of her father, a well known and respected officer of the law, costume designer Gillian Young is handed a cryptic letter from the deceased; it was as if he knew the end was near and wanted to remind her of his love. Convinced that the terrible rumors circling London implicating her father in duplicity are false, Gillian finds her efforts thwarted at every turn when she determines to investigate the details for herself. So many questions, so few answers; not to mention his clandestine visit to her grandparents' vast estate, which has now fallen into her ownership, following his demise.

As Gillian considers what to do with her inheritance, two very different kind of gentlemen rise to the surface proposing assistance, as it appears that her father's shadowy transactions have now translated into danger for Gillian. Struggling to meet the demands of her profession, after being awarded a prestigious commission, Gillian turns to her famous mother's most beloved group of friends, "the least of these", where she finds hidden talent and inspiration for philanthropy.

After much angst, Gillian decides to follow her heart, as well as her mother's advice not to "marry a man if you are not sure sure he loves you for yourself alone", only to suffer a change in circumstances again; placing her in the position to use every method of disguise to find her happily ever after.

"A Lady in Disguise" has every element of a good story; fascinating plot, wonderful characters, lovely historical setting, mystery and intrigue, read-to-the-end romance, compelling inspiration, and a beautiful word flow. What a great book!

Lord Thomas Lockwood has been out riding and noticed the neglected home of his neighbor, Lord Palmer. After Lord Palmers death, his widow couldnt keep up with the repairs. Now that his widow has died, the home is to be inherited by his granddaughter, a seamstress in London. Thomas makes note of repairs at the granddaughters request and begins a friendship with her due to their mutual love of the theatre. Even though they are from two completely different social classes, a romance begins.

Gillian Young is mourning the untimely death of her father in a cart accident. He was a well-respected police officer so Gillian thought until no one shows up at his funeral. Come to find out, her father is suspected of participating in money laundering, prostitution with young girls and other crimes. Gillian just cant believe her beloved father is guilty, so she begins her own investigation. She meets with immediate roadblocks and interference from her police force. She is advised to just let the matter drop. He always kept meticulous files on the cases he worked, so where is the file for his last case? His former partner cant find it nor can anyone else? Gillian knows the file will contain the answers she seeks, but the more she investigates, the more threats that arrive. Can Thomas be trusted? She knows he is interested in her family home in Hampshire, so he is just pretending to like her in order to gain her land and her family home? Is there anyone on the police force she can trust?

This novel combines two of my favorite genres, British mystery and historical British romance. I really enjoyed the mystery presented by the death of Gillians father and I thought the author did an excellent job of depicting how helpless a woman alone in that day could be, especially against the rotten eggs in the police force. I also really liked Gillians care for the theater waifs. She was taught from an early age by her mother to care for the poor, which was a great example to set. Gillians willingness to forgive was also an excellent example of displaying Christs mercy. My only negative is that there was too much time spent on the sewing aspect of the story, which slowed it down in some places. I still would recommend this book as it will certainly entertain.

Gillian Young has recently lost her father in what appears to be a horrible accident. Gillian grew up in a loving home surrounded by caring parents. When this story opens we are are at the seen of her father's funeral. Her mother's grave is nearby as she has sadly already passed away.

At the funeral of her father it has come to her attention that her father was possibly murdered. Gillian can hardly believe that anyone would even consider killing her father. He was a prominent man and was on the police force. She eventually discovers that her father was in the middle of a case, and she decides to finish what he started.

There is also a wonderful romantic story intertwined in this book that I absolutely loved. It has a little triangle between the handsome, Viscount Lockwood and Inspector Collingsworth.

I love stories that capture you from the start, and this book did not disappoint. It has a little bit of everything and Ms. Byrd does a great job in telling Gillian's journey.

I have read other books by Sandra Byrd and she is a terrific writer. If you like romance, mystery and historical Victorian then this book will interest you from beginning to end.

(A copy of this book was given me for my honest review.)
