sdg5 Stars Out Of 5A pleasure to read.March 12, 2018sdgQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5A Dangerous Legacy tells the story of Colin, an English baronet who heads up Reuters news agency in New York. His Legacy is his home, Whitefriars, which is desperate need of repair and renewal. He needs to marry money for its survival along with the livelihood of its 90 tenants. He meets Lucy, a telegrapher for the AP news agency, who also has a Legacy. Her legacy is a 40 year lawsuit and feud between her family and her uncles family. Supplying water to the lower classes hinges on a favorable outcome of this lawsuit. The collaboration and competition between the two news agencies along with the route of the Central American canal during the early days of the 1900s provides the author with interesting historical details to weave her story around. The interaction between Colin and Lucy was lively although they both knew nothing could come of their relationship. Lucys brother, Nick, was a solid contribution as a supporting character. Im looking forward to reading his story in the next book of the series. Ill be keeping Elizabeth Camden on my list of authors to follow.
Vickie5 Stars Out Of 5The Past Influences the PresentJanuary 3, 2018VickieQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Lucy Drake's grandfather Eustace Drake came up with a plumbing invention that would make getting water to upper floors of tall buildings possible. Eustace felt he was using his God-given talent to invent to help others, but, because he had no business drive made an unwise decision to allow his brother Jacob to use his invention while he went off to fight for the Union in return for money to purchase an extravagant gift for his wife before he left, a reminder of his love for her. When he came home he realized Jacob was making a fortune off his invention because of the high price Jacob set for the valve while Eustace got no credit or royalties. So begins the legacy of a decades long legal battle between the rich Saratoga branch of the Drake family and the barely making it New York City branch over the valve that could change life for many tenement dwellers if it was affordable. Jacob's son Thomas uses his money and underhanded means to constantly harrass Lucy and her brother Nick in court and to drive off those who would befriend them.
Sir Colin Beckwith inherits his family home Whitefriars in rural England along with a mountain of debt. Whitefriars is outwardly beautiful but crumbling in disrepair inside. Colin was fascinated as a child with Morse Code and used it as a way to keep up with events around the world. This leads him to work for Reuters news service as a journalist. While covering the Boer War he is trapped alongside troops during battle. He tries to hide the effect loud noises has on him after returning that we recognize today as PTSD.
Colin takes the position of head of the New York City branch for Reuters and hopes to find a rich heiress seeking to marry a British aristocrat to save Whitefriars. Lucy is a telegraph operator for rival beginner Associated Press in the same building. Their paths cross. Colin discovers Lucy has a secret tap on the office of the lawyer for the Saratoga Drakes but agrees to use his social connections to help her and Nick. Neither knows how dangerous this will get.
A good historical book will spark interest in learning more about the time in which it is set. I had to check out more on the Panama Canal, Teddy Roosevelt and the beginning of the news services. It is apparent in Elizabeth Camden's writings that she is a research librarian by day. A very enjoyable book!
MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Historical suspense to delight readersDecember 30, 2017MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5An intriguing historical set in 1903 New York City, this novel follows the life of Lucy Drake, a telegraph operator for the Associated Press, and Sir Colin Beckwith, head of the local Reuters operation. These two rivals also deal with attraction and danger as they work to uncover the plots instigated by Lucy's rich relatives. Colin also hopes to save his ancestral mansion in England. Their struggles and lessons learned add depth to this reading experience. The story has twists and surprises and multiple entwined strands to enrich the powerful tale. It's the first in the author's new series, so more of this captivating family will be coming. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
Laura Davis4 Stars Out Of 5Why is this considered a Christian book?December 29, 2017Laura DavisQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3I always enjoy a novel written by Elizabeth Camden and once again she did not disappoint.
The characters were well developed and the title of the book definitely fits what the story is all about. It was very hard to put down. I was rooting for Lucy and her brother and hoping that Colin would see that Lucy was the right woman for him, rather than chasing after rich heiresses. The story is absolutely riveting with lots of intrigue, suspense and danger. But what disappointed me about this novel was that it had no message of the saving power of Jesus Christ. This was supposed to be a Christian book, but if God was mentioned at all, it was almost as an afterthought.
While Lucy and Colin both grew and proved that there is more to life than money, God seemed to have played no part in their growth. There was mention of talent being a gift from God and that using it to better the lives of others was like God smiling at you. But it was not something that was at the core of this book.
If you want a good, clean read that will keep you captive this is a great book. If you are looking for a Christian book that has a message of faith or redemption, however, this is not it.

KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Definitely a book for the long-time keeper shelf!December 16, 2017KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5There is something so decadent about an edge-of-you-seat suspense paired with historical romance! And this one is riveting. Deeply intricate story threads woven into a complex pattern of loss and greed and vengeance. A villian who has "...no soul and that let him fight with the single-minded zeal of a jackal." (p 12) and a heroine determined to stand up for what is right and just though it alters the course of her life in devastating ways. A family legacy of sorts that has ensnared both Lucy and her brother. The layered depths in the suspense is exceptionally well done. Enthralling historical details -- telegraphy, Morse code, the early days of international news reporting and homing pigeons! Diverse and captivating and all of it plays an important role in this romantic suspense.
Lucy is a grounded working girl -- independent by necessity but also by choice. She loves her job as a telegrapher and is fiercely loyal to the Associated Press. Which makes for some spectacular fireworks when rival company Reuters imports British aristocracy to manage their New York office. Enter Sir Colin Beckwith and let the toe-curling begin. As well as the laughter thanks to the wicked banter this adversarial hero and heroine engage in on a daily basis.
If you look 'pager-turner'up in the dictionary you should find A Dangerous Legacy as the definition. I inhaled this book. Actually woke up at four in the morning and rejoiced because that meant I got to spend two blissful hours reading before I had to get ready for the day! Definitely one for the long-time keeper shelf!
