I co-pastor a small membership congregation and found this book disappointing. The book is written from a Weslyan perspective. I found it weak on Scriptural support. If you agree with statements like this "...systematic theology, philosophy of religion, and church history did not seem helpful in my search for a loving God" (p 5), then you may find this book useful. I don't, and didn't. The author should, IMHO, search for who God IS, as evidenced by ALL the Scriptures, rather than searching only for a "loving" God. This is just one example, but I found statements on practically every page that just left me shaking my head. On the upside, some good points are raised regarding our treatment of "different" people and I agreed with the author there, but again, Biblical support (say, Act 17:26) is essential and, for the most part, lacking. I bought 2 similar books, this one and Daman's "Shepherding the Small Church" and found Daman's to far more useful and Scriptural. In hindsight, the titles are revealing: "Shepherding" vs. "Spiritual Leadership".
