Fantastic book! I can't say enough about it. Murray exposes the subtle but deadly compromises of evangelical leaders during the last 50 years. Sure to be a controversial book no doubt, as Murray criticizes men like J.I. Packer, Alister McGrath, and John Stott. Well documented and well reasoned, Murray also returns to biblical concepts much neglected in our day -- convicting me of my own theological omissions! I hope this book will curtail the unrestrained ecumenicalism that has plagued evangelicalism.

If you have ever wondered how the evangelical church reached its current status then you must read this book. Murray makes this historical account of the past fifty years extremely interesting. He details how the very familiar leaders of the church have played their respective roles. If history is a good teacher then we can learn much from this fine work.

I was thinking this book might be a little dry after first receiving it, but boy was I wrong! Murray provides a concise yet thorough history here of evangelicalism since 1950, and the major struggle over unity at the expense of truth. It was fascinating to read how Billy Graham, Carl F.H. Henry, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, J.I. Packer, John Stott, Francis Schaeffer, Chuck Colson, R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, and others are all connected to the same, decades-long struggle between Biblical truth and Christian unity. This book is a tremendous help in putting into context all the tensions that exist in evangelicalism today. I recommend it highly.

Ian Murray presents with grace and great spiritual insight, the failures, and compromises of 20th century Evangelicalism and one can quickly see how we still feel the effects of these decisions today. Not strictly a retelling of history but also a commentary that is spiritually edifying it truly is a powerful warning and all ministers and Christians should lay hold of this book.
