Tell us a little about yourself.  Larry J. Michael (Ph.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary)-- pastor, educator, author, leader of churches in the United States and England, resides in Birmingham, Alabama, where he serves as Executive Director of Alabama Grief Support Services.

Having served churches in England and the United States, Larry Michael draws from a wealth of pastoral experience. He is one of three generations of pastors, and is excited to see a new cadre of younger leaders carry the torch of biblical leadership forward in the spirit of Charles Spurgeon.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Michael's earlier interest in studying Spurgeon culminated in a Ph.D. dissertation titled "The Effects of Controversy on the Evangelistic Ministry of C. H. Spurgeon" (The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, unpublished, 1989). Later, Spurgeon scholar Dr. Lewis Drummond and Dr. Michael co-taught courses on Spurgeon at Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama. The idea for "Spurgeon on Leadership" emanated from a master's level course, and was written over a three-year period of extensive research and study. Upon its first publication, the book was translated into Korean as well as being published in Nigeria. Now in its Updated Edition, "Spurgeon on Leadership" continues to inspire leaders to rise to their God-given potential in these challenging times.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  How relevant is Charles Haddon Spurgeon in the 21st century? Dr. Larry Michael believes that the principles of leadership that characterized "The Prince of Preachers" are instructive for pastors and Christian leaders today. Michael'a aim is to convey the passion for leadership that Spurgeon exhibited throughout his ministry as the first mega-church pastor in Victorian England.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  "Spurgeon on Leadership" was ranked no.2 in the Top Nine Books on Leadership listed on The Gospel Coalition. Matt Perman wrote: "A highly readable and very insightful primer on leadership based on the fundamentals of how Spurgeon led. It therefore has the best of both worlds: it covers the main areas of leadership from an explicitly Christian perspective. This book covers a lot of helpful ground, from competence and confidence to calling and character; casting vision and building commitment to leading with creativity and compassion. It also covers leading despite criticism and conflict and dealing with illness and depression--looking at all these things from the lens of how Spurgeon led."
