Tell us a little about yourself. I am the Teaching Pastor at Deeside Christian
Fellowship Church in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Deeside is an independent evangleical church,
similar to an American 'Bible Church' with a
commitment to lively, passionate expository
preaching. Many Americans who come to Aberdeen
for Phd's in theology, under the likes of Howard
Marshall and John Webster, would attend Deeside
as their church during their studies. I have an
M.Div (summa cum laude, 2000) from TEDS, and am
close to finishing a doctorate in preaching and
communication at Gordon Conwell seminary under
Dr. Haddon Robinson. So I have experienced the
church on both sides of the atlantic, and am
struck by how similar the experience of
evangelicals is across the 'pond'.
What was your motivation behind this project? I wanted to write a book about 'total discipleship' that was soaked in biblical truth, and yet would be accessible to and inspiring for a wide range of lay people at all stages of tehir CHristian walk. There are study questions after each section that mean the book can be used in a small group setting, and has already been successfully 'piloted' in local churches here in the UK. Its most basic motivation was to inspire 'tired' Christians to look beyond the limitations of their circumstances and be captivated by the eternal plans and character of the God who can give us the 'burning heart'. Christians in the UK and the States are seeing so much apathy in the church - people simply going through the motions of their faith, that we need a wake up call. We need to return to the kind of passionate discipleship that drove the first Christians to give their lives in the gruesome Colosseum, because tehir lives were simply too captivated by Christ to deny him publicly. This is more than a purely emotional response, but a whole life captivated by the glory of God. Our hearts were designed to be captivated by God, and they will be restless until we are consumed by his passions.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I want people who feel disappointed by their commitment to Christ, to be inspired again towards passionate Christian living. That begins biblically by moving away from introspective feelings of how bad my culture is, how bad my church is, how bad my own heart is, and focussing instead on the passions of God. The Scriptures always point us back to teh God as teh source of all passion. What keeps God motivated? What are the main passions in his heart? If I discover what those passions are and give myself to them, I can know the secret of the 'burning heart' that turned the Emmaus Road disciples (Lk 24) from just another couple of disappointed saints into passionate followers of the risen Jesus.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I am a great fan of John Piper whose preaching and writing are both 'sound and exciting', as well as Wayne Grudem, my personal mentor from seminary who combines a passion for accurate theology with a heart to make that theology practical and helpful for the everyday struggles of non academic Chrisians. I am also drawn to the writings of Philip Yancey, Kent Hughes and especially John Stott from my homeland who show skilfully how deep biblical truth invades real life.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: This book is hopefully very readable, but doesn't shy away from deep truths. It condemns the church's 'dumbing down' of God which I believe will to spiritual dwarves rather than burning heart ginats in years to come. Don't read if you don;t want to be challnged and changed!
