Who can resist this classic Christmas story of redemption! Miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who has no Christmas cheer for anyone, prefers to sit alone in his house, waiting for the "humbug" of Christmas to be over. But this year is different. On Christmas Eve, four ghostly visitors--his former business partner, followed by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come--show him the error of his ways. Author Bio

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a well-loved, Victorian-era British author and social critic. He wrote numerous works that are now considered classics and created some of the best-known fictional characters of all time. Born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office, Charles Dickens' family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals "Household Words" and "All the Year Round." Dickens died in June 1870.

John Leech (29 August 1817 – 29 October 1864) was a British caricaturist and illustrator. He was best known for his work for Punch, a humorous magazine for a broad middle-class audience, combining verbal and graphic political satire with light social comedy. Many of his cartoons were concerned with the plight of the poor, though others were more straightforward humorous drawings. Some made occasional use of speech balloons and sequential drawings. One of them, 'Mr. Briggs' (1849), can be considered a prototypical comic series. Dickens said of his pictures that they were ’always the drawings of a gentleman.’

Editorial Reviews

"Paraclete Press has created a stocking stuffer sure to convey the holiday spirit—an affordable paperback edition of Charles Dickens'  A Christmas Carol featuring the illustrations that adorned the first edition 173 years ago." —Ray Kelly, The Republican

"The print is good. It’s very readable. As a highlight, it is printed with the original 1843 etchings. This gives the book a certain connection to the original. If you love Christmas and want to catch the spirit of the season, there are no better options than A Christmas Carol." —Robert Cornwall

"What I haven’t had is a handy paperback, suitable to reading to a child (or oneself) in bed, or for tucking into a purse or backpack while traveling over the holidays. Paraclete Press has just published exactly the right edition for that need, one that includes the 1843 illustrations, with comfortably large print for bedside lamp-lighters. If you haven’t read the full text, or haven’t read it recently, it would be a great addition to your home library. And unless your holiday decorations are, well, Scrooge-like, it would be a perfect stocking stuffer." — Martha Spong

"A beautiful gift for the whole family, Charles Dickens’ classic novel, A Christmas Carol, gets a printed makeover that includes illustrations from the original 1834 publication by Paraclete Press. It is a perfect gift for the whole family or for anyone who wants to curl up to this story with a cup of hot cocoa, relive Scrooge’s ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, and commit like him to "honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach." — Phoebe Farag Mikhail
