Learn the secret of living with contentment, peace, and security.
Pause for a moment and ask yourself what your life would be like if it were completely without fear? If you did not fear death. If you did not fear life and what it might bring. If you did not fear any man, or woman, or any living creature. Would you live differently?
In this unique work of never-before-published teaching, Dallas Willard revolutionizes our understanding of Psalm 23 by taking this comfortably familiar passage and revealing its extraordinary promises: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.... I will fear no evil." The psalmist claims to live without any need and without any fear. How is that possible?
Written with Willards characteristic gentle wisdom, Life Without Lack reveals the secret to enjoying Gods presence and becoming utterly caught up in his abundant generosity. The more we practice living in his presence, the more we experience the peace and freedom from worry that is promised in the psalm. Based on a series of talks by the late author and edited by his friend Larry Burtoft and by his daughter, Rebecca Willard Heatley, Life Without Lack will forever change the way you understand and apply the most well-known passage in all of Scripture.
Dallas Willard (19352013) was a professor at the University of Southern Californias School of Philosophy from 1965 until his retirement in 2012. His groundbreaking books The Divine Conspiracy, The Great Omission, Knowing Christ Today, The Spirit of the Disciplines, Renovation of the Heart, and Hearing God forever changed the way thousands of Christians experience their faith.
Living BoldlyAge: Under 18Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5A Feast For the SoulFebruary 28, 2018Living BoldlyAge: Under 18Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I really enjoyed reading Life Without Lack: Living in the Fullness of Psalm 23 by the late Dallas Willard. The 23rd Psalm is one of my favorite passages in the Bible, and I was so excited to dive into this book and learn from Dallas Willard. I was not at all disappointed. Life Without Lack holds an abundance of wealth: a feast for the soul, overflowing with the truths of Psalm 23.
Dallas Willard unpacks this beloved passage of Scripture. With fresh insights and plenty of practical applications, readers will have a greater understanding of the Lord's provision, abundant blessings, and matchless grace. These are among the elements that characterize a life without lack.
This is a wonderful book. It's one to be read, meditated upon, and studied... again and again! I am honored to highly recommend Life Without Lack: Living in the Fullness of Psalm 23.
*I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of Life Without Lack: Living in the Fullness of Psalm 23 from the publisher. The opinion stated is my own. I have not been compensated in any way.*
K Fischer4 Stars Out Of 5A wonderful, in-depth read!February 27, 2018K FischerQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Life Without Lack is not a book that you will be able to rush through. Dallas Willard's depth forces you to slow down and take in each thought he shares. I honestly want to go back and reread it immediately so that I am certain I didn't miss anything.
Based on Psalm 23, the author identifies ways to live a life that lacks nothing; not that we have everything we want, but that we have everything we need. He shares ways to live in God's presence and therefore experience greater levels of peace in our lives. He reminds us that all of our needs can be met through God when we fully trust in his promises. We must let go of what society tells us we need and realize that God has much more planned for our lives than even we can imagine.
This book was a great reminder that we do not need to be anything more than who are currently are in order to have a close relationship with Jesus. I most appreciated the final chapter, where he walks us through daily life with Christ. He gives practical ideas on how to connect with Jesus throughout our day. It has changed my way of thinking about the relationship I have with Christ.
I received an advance reader copy from the publisher.
Melanie5 Stars Out Of 5Before Dallas Willard joined The Divine Conspiracy, he learned to live a Life Without LackFebruary 27, 2018MelanieQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0When I first read The Divine Conspiracy, I was so thrilled by Dallas Willards description of life in the kingdom of God that I bought fifteen copies of the book to give to my friends and I recommended it to at least that many more. Alas, only one among that number fully shared my delight and wonder in the discovery of The Divine Conspiracy.
Undaunted by the tepid and/or bewildered reception my passionate endorsement received five years ago, I am once again ready to tell anyone who will listen that (thanks to the skillful editing of his 1991 talks) Dallas Willard has once again given us a book for all who long to follow Christ more than they long for anything else.
The Divine Conspiracy is Gods master plan for his people through the entire course of human history. Life Without Lack: Living in the Fullness of the 23rd Psalm is a practical guide for any individual who wants to live in daily intimacy with Jesus. Larry Burtoft and Becky Heatly have transformed spoken words from one of the greatest teachers of our generation into a book that captures both his voice and his wisdom. Dallas marks a path through the twenty-third psalm that the youngest believer can follow. At the same time he reveals endless horizons of peace and joy to delight the heart of the most mature saint.
I received an advance copy from the publisher, and as I read through the first time, I imagined Jesus asking, Dallas, do you love me more than these? After Dallas answers simply, Yes, Lord, I do, Jesus repeats the charge that follows the question: Feed my lambs. And so Dallas shows us plainly that the Lord is our Shepherd who will supply all our needs in abundance.
If you dont see how Life Without Lack is possible, Dallas will guide you step by step until you do. The process is relatively simple, but you must commit completely. You must surrender your life to the transforming work of the Spirit. If you have already surrendered your life completely to the Spirit, Life Without Lack may bless you with a fuller understanding of Gods design in the transformation process, a greater appreciation for the necessity of personal effort, and a deeper trust in the One who made transformation possible. But perhaps the most important blessing could be that you will learn how to better nourish any little lambs in your care.
If you love Jesus, I think you will be pleased with this book.
Linda5 Stars Out Of 5Finally A Book That Delivers!February 26, 2018LindaQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I believe our world has been waiting for the message of hope and promise in Life Without Lack for a long, long time. When I started reading this latest book by the late popular writer and professor, Dallas Willard, I have to report that I may have rolled my eyes a bit. Since it is based on such a familiar and well covered Psalm, I wondered if I would learn anything new. Then page by page, Dallas won me over with his profoundly simple words such as: We live in a world under the care of a wholly good God with unlimited power, who lacks nothing and intends only good for His creation. In this book, Dallas builds a case for a fierce and fearless life by logically laying out one major idea or teaching at a time without ever overwhelming the reader. This book made me stop and think and feel all along the way to the finish. Intrigued, involved, and inspired from the first chapter to the last, I highly recommend Life Without Lack for both individual reading and group study. I received an Advance Readers Copy from the publisher.
Will5 Stars Out Of 5Life Without Lack Book ReviewJanuary 30, 2018WillQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Dallas Willard has been instrumental in my life at helping me move from being simply someone who says that believe in Jesus, to someone who actively and intimately loves Christ Jesus. I was presented with Willard's The Divine Conspiracy at a point in my life when I was heavily considering walking away from my calling into ministry. I was done. I didn't want to go down that path anymore. I still "believed in Jesus", whatever that really means, but I didn't find significance or purpose in ministry. I'd rather just watch from the sidelines. Exposure to Willard's books changed all that. Not that Willard pushed the for call back into ministry, but his explanation of the intimacy found in Christ Jesus and what he means to truly follow Him, helped me to see life through a new lens, a new perspective. I will forever be grateful and thankful for Dallas Willard.
When Dallas Willard died in May of 2013 I was heartbroken. No one knew it until today, but I cried in my car on my way to work after finding out. Although I knew Dallas was experiencing the wonderful presence of Christ, I grieved the loss of an incredible man of God and the end to his books and teachings.
Thankfully, through the work of Gary Black Jr., Gary Moon, John Ortberg, and more, Dallas' influence and work has continued.
Life Without Lack: Living in the Fullness of Psalm 23 is another beautiful continuation and extension of Willard's work posthumously. Through the efforts and collaboration of Larry Burtoft (a friend of Willard) and Becky Willard Heatley (Willard's daughter) another public addition to Willard's catalogue has been preserved.
Life Without Lack is a compilation of Willard's eight-week teachings series on Psalm 23 originally taught in early 1991 to a group of roughly thirty people at Valley Vista Christian Community. The teaching was preserved on cassette tape, and transposed into this book, a project that Burtoft had planned on for years, but never found fruition until after Willard's death. As a Dallas Willard enthusiast, I was absolutely delighted to hear the news of the release of this book.
The book is broken into eight chapters, which follow the eight original teaching sessions. Each chapter richly and deeply defines and explains life with God, through the context of God's ever-present character. Psalm 23 provides the foundation of the teaching yet is not overly expounded. If one were looking for a commentary on Psalm 23, this is not the book for that. What is elucidated is the fact that the Good Shepherd as described in Psalm 23, offers true freedom and peace in an intimate relationship with Him.
Life Without Lack is meaty. It is not a quick read. It is a book that is meant to take time to digest, time to apply to one's life, and time to dwell upon. This is not a new concept to those who are familiar with Willard. For me, at least, while reading Willard, to read and re-read the same chapter in a sitting, is commonplace. Good content takes time and reflection to grasp and process.
Overall, I highly recommend this book. Read it slowly. Read it purposely. And read it with the hopeful expectation that you'll be enlightened, encouraged, and invigorated by it. May you grow deeper in your relationship with Christ Jesus through it. If this is your very first Dallas Willard book, then I recommend you borrow or purchase Hearing God, The Spirit of the Disciplines, The Divine Conspiracy, or Renovation of the Heart to read beforehand or closely afterward. Dallas Willard writes and speaks with a breadth of knowledge, worth taking the time to ponder and apply.
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. (This in no way affected my honest review of the book)
