"Paul Tripp constantly turns us back to the life-giving power of the gospel and God's unfailing grace. Parenting our children is one of life's greatest challenges, and Paul points us to the one thing that can make a difference—a genuine encounter with the living God."
TobyMac, hip hop recording artist; music producer; songwriter

"Simply put, I read everything that Paul Tripp writes. I can’t afford to miss one word."
Ann Voskamp, New York Times best-selling author, One Thousand Gifts

"This is the most meaningful book I have read all year. It is both theological and practical, a rare combination for a parenting book. For years, people have asked me to write a book on parenting. After reading this, I am convinced that I could never write one better than this. I’m so glad I read this, but I wish I could have read it twenty years ago. After reading Parenting, I was torn. Part of me wanted to sit, cry, and confess all of my failures as a parent. The other part wanted to scream with excitement for the tremendous insight I now have to be a better parent."
Francis Chan, New York Times best-selling author, Crazy Love and Forgotten God

"I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is simply outstanding. This is Tripp at his best: he shows us the big picture of life with Christ and gets down to the nitty-gritty specifics of walking by grace through faith. Tripp's manifesto is about more than simply our duty as parents—it's about our privilege of being ambassadors of Jesus Christ to our kids. Moms and dads from every culture will benefit from Tripp's call for us to live in light of the grace and hope we have in Jesus."
Gloria Furman, pastor’s wife, Redeemer Church of Dubai; author, The Pastor's Wife and Missional Motherhood

"This book is so timely for me. My bride and I are raising four children aged five and under, and we need help! It's easy to find books with parenting tips on how to correct our children's behavior, but Paul Tripp's book goes far beyond behavior; he takes the reader to the source of the problem—the heart. If we understand our children at a heart level and have a proper understanding of the gospel, then we can parent them as God intends. Paul Tripp has written a simple yet profound book. Parents, you need to read this now. You will surely be blessed."
Webb Simpson, professional golfer; 2012 US Open Champion

"I am an imperfect parent. You probably are too. Buy this book and soak in it. This is not another '5 Steps to Becoming a Perfect Parent'—instead, Tripp wants us to see our relationship to God and to our children through a big-picture lens. My wife and I are always-go-never-stop parents of young children. If you know the feeling, this book will be both challenging and refreshing, and ultimately it will be a great blessing to your journey. Tripp has made me think in a fresh way about the extremely important and tremendously challenging task that is everyday parenting. To raise up a child is a great responsibility—let us take it up with reverence, joy, and a loving heart!"
Jacob Tamme, NFL® tight end

"A subject needing careful study, a messenger committed to the truth, and a careful application of God’s Word. The power is in the combination, and it all comes together in Paul Tripp’s new book called Parenting. Read it and see one of your most important human responsibilities become more of what God created it to be."
James MacDonald, Pastor, Harvest Bible Chapel, Rolling Meadows, Illinois; author, Vertical Church

"Once again Paul Tripp leads with grace and truth, reminding us how our gospel identity informs everything we do. Parenting offers refreshing insight for new parents and hope for those in the trenches."
Brandon Hatmaker, author, Barefoot Church; Pastor, Austin New Church, Austin, Texas

Tripp gets to the heart of the matter in every chapter with examples and clear instruction. If your looking for something refreshingly gospel centered this is a must read. It helps parents focus on the long-term goal not the short term daily struggles.

Simply put, this book is a must read for any parent serious about raising their children according to the Bible. From the moment I first opened the book until I wrote this review, I found myself challenged with how I parent my children.

This is an area that I constantly struggle with and this book has been a great encouragement for me to read. The author does not write from the perspective of having been the perfect parent in that he shares some of his own struggles and what he learned from them. Every chapter begins with a story or a couple stories of a parenting situations every parent has experienced or has seen fleshed out in public areas that leave us shaking our heads. The unfortunate part of the stories he shares, is they are too often all too familiar to me as having done it myself.

But the author does not leave us to wallow around in self-pity knowing how far we have fallen from our big pre-parent aspirations, but encourages you to move forward with the principles he shares and how they can, as the front cover of the book says, radically change your family. And this is the best part of the book, it is gospel centered. This is not a feel good book about parenting and how you can do it all on your own and all you need to do is pull yourself up by your bootstraps kind of book. It is a book that causes you to fall at the foot of the cross, admitting you cannot do it on your own and asking God to help you do it. This is not the approach most American parents want to accept but it is necessary for us to raise children in a God-honoring and gospel-centered way. If our goal as a Christian parent is not to raise children who love God, then what is our goal? What are we hoping to accomplish? If we do not have a goal in our parenting, then how can we know whether we are parenting the right way or not? The last things we as Christians should do is just go about our parenting ways with no ultimate end in mind besides helping them be successful adults. Our goal should be to raise children who fear and honor God with their lives and follow Him as a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. If that is your goal, or if that is what you deeply long for your goal as a parent to be, then this book will give you direction and guidance in how to make that happen.

One quote from the book that truly stands out is this one Crossway also posted on their Instagram account:

The goal of parenting is not control of behavior, but rather heart and life change.

As a parent, this is a hard pill to swallow. I want to be able to parent in such a way and through what I say get my children to accept what I say and do what I say. But the issue with that is I do not have the power to get any child to change on my own. Only God has the ability to bring about heart change and eventually life change. And this makes it tough on us because it means no amount of yelling or threatening or anything else will bring about the change we hope or desire in our kids, only Gods grace can bring about that change. This book points us to remember that each and every day in each and every parenting situation that arises.

All that said, this is a book I would purchase for every parent in my church if I could. It is a book I would highly encourage and recommend for any parent, soon to be parent or married couple who aspires to have children in the future.

In "Parenting," Paul Tripp encourages parents to embrace the high calling of being the primary instrument God uses to influence and guide children in their journey to find Him. Unlike typical parenting books, Tripp offers very few tactile suggestions on how to handle misbehaviour or set down rules in the home. Instead, the author wants readers to rethink their approach in parenting and how crucial this role is in shaping their next generation. The book is comprised of fourteen principles that serve to show how parenting is not so much what we can do by our own power but what God chooses to do through us. In these fourteen chapters, the author discusses how the role of parenting is to help children realize that they are desperately lost and need to find grace and redemption through Christ. As redeemed sinners, we are powerless to change anyone including ourselves let alone young sinners who do not yet see their need for Jesus. However, we find grace, hope, and strength in the person and work of Jesus who has conquered everything including the sinful hearts of both parents and children. Thus, parents are not to find security in saying the right words or dispensing the exact amount of necessary discipline but to put their faith in Christ alone who has commissioned parents to be the most influential tool to bring young hearts to Him. For sure, we need to speak life-giving words and practice appropriate discipline but parents are just as in need of grace and mercy from God as their children. Contrary to always being ready with the right parenting response, decision, or words, parents should expect to have tense, awkward parenting moments where they have no idea how to proclaim Christ to their children. In these scenarios, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us and we can rely on His limitless strength to sustain and use us to reveal Him to our children one small step at a time.

I would gladly recommend this book to parents in all stages of child rearing. For exasperated parents looking for easy and simple solutions to solve their parenting troubles, I am afraid this book may not come across as particularly helpful. I admit that when I started reading, I was somewhat expecting this book to be a handy guidebook to curb misbehaviour and establish discipline in the home. However, Tripp offers much more than parenting tips by showing that the root of child-rearing problems lies not in using the right methods but in addressing the sinful heart that refuses to yield to any authority but its own. Parents need to stand firmly on the promises found in Scripture and the faithfulness of God to direct their children in seeing the glory and wisdom of God as being the supreme good that their hearts should yearn for. When children begin to seek Christ and His righteousness, they can then obey God and their parents with submissive, humble hearts.
