Tell us a little about yourself. I'm the married mom of four adult children and we now have five grandchildren! We have lived in the south eastern side of Michigan our entire lives. Surrounding our farm house (which we bought and restored from my husband's grandparents over thirty years ago) are fields of varying types of crops. Just down the street is Lake Erie which I often walk to and down the shoreline. Though we feel like we are in the country, we are just north of Toledo, OH, and south of Detroit, MI. To us, we have the best of country living and benefits of city life.
What was your motivation behind this project? Over the past eight years since I've become a grandma, I've paid more attention to the role of grandparenting. I've noticed those grandparents who take on the role with gusto and purposefully invest in their grandchildren's lives...that's the type of grandparent I want to be. As opposed to those grandparents who seemingly dip in and out of their grandchildren's lives without much care or thought about how they might love, serve, and influence these precious little lives for eternity. Thus, writing about stories and developing activities, prayers, and takeaway life action steps seemed like perfect timing. I was so excited to write for children again!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My earnest hope and prayer is that moms and dads (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, neighbors, friends, teachers, and Sunday school leaders) will sit down with their children during the week to read through the stories and the accompanying activities and talk about what they are learning. Living Bravely is a realistic resource of real life scenarios our children and grandchildren face in an ever-increasingly hostile world. This text is a practical tool that equips adults to eternally impact their little ones and infuse them with biblical principles to overcome tough situations.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I love this question because my two oldest grandsons helped me to develop some of the stories, games, activities, and suggestions for communicating God's way of responding to life's many experiences. I still remember sitting down with pen and paper in hand and asking pointed questions to my grandsons and they were so honest about what they would do, how they would feel, and ways to obey Jesus even when it was hard. I was reminded over and over again while writing that our children need our prayers, our support, and our consistent love to bolster them in this hard world.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I am a big fan of the classics. Writers such as Oswald Chambers, Spurgeon, C.S. Lewis, and the like stir my heart and mind daily. I also find myself reading and revisiting the works of Paul Tripp, David Powilson, Ed Welch, and Elizabeth Elliot.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I'm active on all the social media sites and love interacting with readers so find me on FB/Twitter/Instagram/Pinterest and at my blog.
