In 52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables, Bob Welch walks readers through Hugo's masterpiece, extracting dozens of uniquely spiritual reflections from this enduring portrait of poverty, social injustice, mercy, and redemption. Welch reminds us that Jean Valjean's life provides the truest example of why real love is found in the grittiest places, and that hearts are made whole beneath the crush of mercy. Most important, though, Welch keeps returning to the intersections of faith and reality throughout Hugo's writing - those places where mercy becomes an inroad to the heart, and where love is only truly received when it is given without condition.
Discover again why life's purpose is found not in attending to personal needs and desires, but in responding to the hearts of others.

Samantha CovilleGender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Inspirational Read Made From a Lovable ClassicDecember 16, 2014Samantha CovilleGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Hugo's beloved masterpiece has been read, studied and adapted for stage and film. But, there is still much more to be gleaned from this tale of love, loss, trust, family, pride, money, faith and fight. Author Bob Welch present 52 lessons that are found within the pages that detail the story of Jean Valjean and Cosette. Everything from love to faith and forgiveness and beyond.
What could be better than learning valuable life lessons from one of my stories of all time? Welch takes some possibly confusing old English passages and provides modern, yet timeless, looks at the world around us. They're easy to follow and even easier to enjoy. And they're valuable little anecdotes that truly are worth taking time to sit down and read. It's not the usual cookie cutter daily inspiration; it's actually a lesson, not a rehash.
And the formatting is superb. 52 lessons can easily be turned into a two month project, a year long exploration or maybe a week long dive into learning. The chapters are labeled pretty plainly so you can easily refind a particular lesson when the need arises or share it with a friend. And to whoever did the grammar editing: kudos to you. Usually I ca catch a sentence or two that doesn't sit right, but this was well done.
I hope Welch continues to share classics with us as it provides an easily recognizable way to connect. I'm already going back for my second reading and I expect I'll be keepin this on my shelf for quite some time. Four and a half brooms out of five!
*I received this book for free from the author but it in no way affected my review.
Enchanting RoseColoradoAge: 25-34Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Gives you the desire to love at the deepestOctober 4, 2014Enchanting RoseColoradoAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I flew through the pages of this book, craving more from each chapter and eagerly anticipating the next lesson Bob Welch had in store through the lives of the characters from Les Miserables. This is a book that kept my complete attention making it difficult to set down and once finished made me want to pick it up again for a slower approach, one that I could savor and glean from.
Each lesson that Welch writes about is a lesson for any reader. These are lessons that will challenge your walk with the Lord and make you question your sincerity when worshiping the King of kings. From love to compassion, selflessness to freedom, grace to faith, Bob Welch covers a multitude of characteristics that can change one's life for the good and honor of Jesus Christ. The book opened my heart and made me want love at the deepest.
". . .the purest, deepest love is more the stuff of wading through the darkness of a sewer system beneath the burden of another than it is flowers and butterflies and knights on white horses and Chanel No. 5 and sunset smiles. The stuff that's not clean and trendy, but gnarled and challenging. "All noble things," writes Oswald Chambers, "are difficult,'" (page 152)
This book is refreshing, encouraging, and challenging. I highly recommend this book!
Each lesson is only 3 - 4 pages long and a chapter a day is not only a benefit for the you, but also for those around you because as you read these words of wisdom a change for the greater - for the Lord - will begin to take place.
"Nothing lifts Jesus' message of hope more than those who live it out in the lives of others; nothing disparages it more than those who don't." (page 22)

Faith WarriorNew HampshireAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 552 Little Lessons from Les Misrables by Bob WelchOctober 1, 2014Faith WarriorNew HampshireAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 552 Little Lessons from Les Misrables is a collection of lessons learned by events, behaviors, and characteristics of the characters within the Les Misrables story. Each lesson talked about relates to the readers life according to their current/past experiences and guides them towards the better choice and past based on the storys characters. The lessons are all easy to understand. Not only do the lessons give a Biblical representation of the events from Les Misrables, but they also include Bible verses to support them. I found it all to be quite an enlightening package; Les Misrables story snippets, Biblical lessons, and Scripture verses.
I loved reading 52 Little Lessons from Les Misrables! I have seen the 1998 version of Les Misrables starring Liam Neeson and I loved it. This book was no disappointment, it proved to be a definite page-turner. I found great ideas and solutions to every day problems and experiences. There are quite a few lessons which I intend on putting into practice in my own life.
I highly recommend Les Misrables to all readers! I loved it!!!

Karen @ Living UnabridgedAge: 25-34Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 552 Little Lessons with Great MeaningOctober 1, 2014Karen @ Living UnabridgedAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Les Miserables is a classic for a reason. Bob Welch has designed a lovely little book to supplement this iconic story, whether you love the unabridged book, the movies, or the musical.
Unlike the source material, the sections are not long. You could read the entire book in just a few days, or you could spread them out over the course of a year (one a week) as part of a devotional time. You could also use this book as you read through Hugo's fantastic work.
These lessons will help you dig deeper into the text (or context of the movie) and see meaning in sometimes overlooked moments. There are some questions at the end which would help make this a suitable choice for a book club.
Highly recommended for fans of Les Miserables in any of its incarnations.

So, I wondered if this book would be good or not, and I was not at all disappointed. Bob Welch has written an excellent book in 52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables.
Welch identifies a number of different spiritual issues which are dealt with in the play. He discusses them by giving examples from the performance / book. This is a Christo-centric book. He looks at a number of issues, such as price, loss, poverty, social injustice, grace, forgiveness, mercy, redemption, transformation and more. .
Every chapter, and they are short, 3-5 pages, are filled with biblical examples and life examples to help keep the reader attentive and to gain a better understanding of the application from Les Miserables. This was an excellent book. One which will be used as a resource book as well.
