I bought this book for my 2 sixth graders because we are studying the states and capitals this year. I specifically wanted to concentrate on teaching the capitals and location of states on a map. This book was not helpful for either. Each state lesson begins with the student writing the state nickname, bird, tree, flower, and the date it became a state, then reading a few paragraphs describing the state. This reading portion typically contains references to battles and other information a 3rd-5th grader might not be familiar with. This is followed by an activity page, consisting of a crossword puzzle or word search, for example. The final page is comprehension questions, based on the reading portion. The only "maps" (pictures) provided are very basic, TINY outline maps on the first page of each state lesson, showing the location of the state. There are no opportunities for students to find and identify states on a map themselves. State capitals are not taught, which I was very disappointed about. I think it's much more important for students to learn the location and capitals, then to spend time learning nicknames, birds and trees. I will be making my own curriculum for our states and capitals lessons, and perhaps using this book as a supplement.
