What Happened on Beale Street is an exciting addition to the Secrets of the South Mysteries from bestselling author Mary Ellis. These standalone, complex crime dramas follow a private investigator's quest to make the world a better place...solving one case at a time.
A cryptic plea for help from a childhood friend sends cousins Nate and Nicki Price from New Orleans to Memphis, the home of scrumptious barbecue and soulful blues music. When they arrive at Danny Andre's last known address, they discover signs of a struggle and a lifestyle not in keeping with the former choirboy they fondly remember.
Danny's sister, Isabelle, reluctantly accepts their help. She and Nate aren't on the best of terms due to a complicated past, yet they will have to get beyond that if they want to save Danny.
On top of Danny's alarming disappearance and his troubled relationship with Isabelle, Nate also has to rein in his favorite cousin's overzealousness as a new and eager PI. Confronted with a possible murder, mystery, and mayhem in the land of the Delta blues, Nate must rely on his faith and investigative experience to keep one or more of them from getting killed.
Mary Ellis is the bestselling author of many books, including A Widow's Hope, An Amish Family Reunion, and Living in Harmony. She and her husband live in central Ohio, where they try to live a simpler style of life.
"Easy to read, well researched and full of great discussion points for any book club, Mary Ellis' novels should not be missed."

Friends since childhood, Nicki is the one he calls when he finds himself in deep trouble. Little does she know the direction his life has taken or the dire circumstances he is facing. She simply recognizes that her friend needs her and her cousin to come to Memphis. When she and Nate arrive, they find themselves in a situation far worse than they expected. I always thought of Memphis as a visitor-friendly city with Graceland and so many other sights to see, but Nicki's fianc and her cousin insist she needs to stay in the hotel and do her detective work with a computer rather than going out into the city with Nate. As in the first book of this series, she is not content to sit around at a computer all day and soon finds another mystery to solve that involves jewels reportedly missing since 1960. One of the few people who believes they exist is the elderly gentleman who was the bellman at the hotel for 50 years. To add to the drama, Danny's sister is being stalked. The author has packed this story with suspense, mystery, action, romance, faith, and a bit of whimsy. Several of the characters bring so much fun into the story but others are on the dark side and cause a lot of concern for the lead characters. Nicki has got to be my favorite character because of the situations and predicaments she gets herself into. Nate almost seems to have undergone a personality change from the first book and actually seems to want the assistance Nicki can offer rather than trying to send her back home at every turn. I enjoyed the story and want to know what happens next.

What Nicki doesnt realize is that her help is needed right away. She decides to answer her friends request, but by the time she flies to see him she has trouble finding him. She phones his sister and the search begins. Nicki and Nate are hired by Isabelle Andre, the sister of the missing man. Nate and Isabelle rub each other the wrong way and dont get along. Nicki pushes too hard on the investigation, getting herself thrown off the case.
With Nate now full-time on the Andre case, Nicki has nothing to do. They are staying in a ritzy old hotel with lots of history so she takes a tour of the hotel. While on tour she learns about a mystery concerning a series of scavenger hunts that took place in the mid to late 1950s. The prizes for the winners of the scavenger hunt were expensive jewels. The last scavenger hunt ended without the jewels being found, so Nicki thinks they are still in the hotel just waiting to be found. She starts her own investigation to find the missing jewels.
I enjoyed the reading of this second book in the series more than the first book. The characters of Nicki and Nate were more developed and I had a history with them carried over from book one in the series. I really liked Nickis caring and compassionate nature, especially toward the elderly folks in this story. I thought Nate a great guy with a sense of humor, loyalty and protectiveness toward those who are weaker. I never saw his romantic line of the story coming and was surprised, but pleased. I loved the jewel mystery that Nicki was involved in and the people she met while following the clues. The next book in the series will be released in August 2016 and is titled Magnolia Moonlight.

Review: This one started off with a bang! Danny the man who dies was a fantastic character and I was sad that he was the victim. I true man who lived out his Christianity authentically. There were two mysteries going on at once. One a murder and totally unrelated was jewelry that was hidden in a scavenger hunt was never found. I loved both of them!! Nikki and Hunter were part of it along with Isabelle and Nate, Nikkis boss & partner. It just kept getting better and better as it progressed. The mystery did not come together until then end and for someone who likes to guess the who did it there was no way to do that!! Which was awesome. Characters were rich and well written with a real life kind of interaction.

IolaNew ZealandAge: 45-54Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Read book 1 firstMay 12, 2016IolaNew ZealandAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 4Meets Expectations: 1I had two problems with What Happened on Beale Street. The first was that solving the question of what happened on Beale Streetthe murder of Danny Andredidnt seem to be the focus on the novel. Instead, it seemed like it was little more than a handy plot device to get newly-licensed private investigator Nicki Price from her home in New Orleans to Memphis, so she could investigate a fifty-year-old mystery in hotel.
My second problem was that I didnt warm to Nicki Price, and I liked her fianc, Hunter Galen, even less. This is perhaps my fault, because this is the second book in Mary Elliss Secrets of the South Mysteries series, and I havent read the first, Midnight on the Mississippi. This Nicki and Hunter, and maybe Id have liked them better if Id read the first book. As it was, Nicki came across as nave and lacking intelligence, while Hunter came off as arrogant and controlling.
Having said that, Nicki and Hunter werent meant to be the focus of What Happened on Beale Street (even though Nicki did her best to steal the show, and the climax of her subplot was actually more satisfying than the payoff from the main murder plot, and I did enjoy the scenes where we got to explore the opulent Peabody Hotel).
What Happened on Beale Street centres aroud Nate Price (Nickis cousin and boss) and his search to find out what happened to Danny Andre, Nickis best friend, a some-time saxophone player in some of the blues clubs on Beale Street. He reconnects with Dannys sister, Isabella, an old acquaintance from school days, and that provides most of the relational interest in what is otherwise a straightforward mystery novel (well, as straightforward as a mystery novel ever is, with all the requisite twists and turns on the journey to find whodunit).
Overall, while What Happened on Beale Street is a solid mystery novel with a developing romance, it wasnt as satisfying as Id hoped.
