The second book in Chuck Blacks Wars of the Realm series, Rise of the Fallen follows the angel, Validus. The last angel created by God, Validus often finds himself on the sidelines of major events, until he chosen by the archangel Michael for a special task.

The novel starts with Validus in the present day, but soon goes back to 4,000 years before Christ. Time goes back and forth through the past and present, until Validus meets Drew Carter, the main character from book one, Cloak of the Light. From that point on, the present day events coincide with the events of book one. Only now we see them from Validus perspective.

Where book one took place mainly in the physical world, or the Middle Realm, the events of book two take place mostly in the spiritual world, or the Upper Realm.

While I found a lot of the detail of fighting technique and battle strategy to slow the pace, I still loved this book. All of the action is still there, and the characters are still very well developed. I look forward to the next book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Blogging for Books in return for an honest review.

Chuck Black in his new book Rise Of The Fallen Book Two in the Wars of the Realm series published by Multnomah Books continues the adventure with Drew Carter.

From the back cover: A six thousand year war rages and now the demonic Fallen are coming for himthe one man shrouded in mystery. Only Validus stands in their way.

Validus is the last and least of Gods angels, but hes seen much across the millennia since his creation. Empires have risen and fallen as angelic and demonic forces battle in a raging war that will determine humanitys fate and the fate of his defeated brothers.

Eventually called to be an earth-bound warrior, Validus rises to a position of power and respect, commanding legions of angels through impossible battles and overwhelming odds. But when orders arrive from the Creators most elite Messenger, he finds himself suddenly demoted to a task of apparent insignificance considering the fierce war they are waging against the demonic Fallen the covert protection of one unbelieving man.

Validus soon finds himself on a mission that will push him beyond his abilities as he battles to protect Drew Carter, for the Fallen are coming for him. Legions of them.

As Validus races against time to discover why Drew is so important to humanitys survival, can he stand between Drew and all who would destroy him?

In Psalms 91:11 God tells us, For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. That is a good thing too because Drew Carter needs all the help he can get. Validus has been there since the beginning. He has seen it all and now he is involved with the protection of Man. Chuck Black weaves a marvelous story about God, Angels and Man and how they are all woven together. This is a highly suspenseful story that will keep you interested from the first word until the very last. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.

Prepare to be disappointed. Weve waited who knows how long (over a year) to read what happened after that epically painful cliffhanger in Cloak of the Light. But do we continue from there? No, we do not. In fact, we get to go BACK like a bajillion years and spend the book working our way forward, which aside from the fact ya know CLIFFHANGER was actually pretty awesome.

The book started a bit before creation and traveled through all these major battles and the events (long term) leading up to the modern day war. It was easily the coolest thing Ive read so far this year. The outlook, from the angels POV, brought up so many tiny interesting details that made my mind explode. Reading this book made me want to delve through my bible to see what we know for fact and what is fiction. It made me want to know as much as I possible could. For that, Chuck Black is the best author I’ve encountered in a while. Thank you.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. Enjoy reading and click on the cover to read an excerpt (although personally I wouldnt taunt myself like that, just go get the book!).

For months now, I've been eagerly anticipating this, the second book in Chuck Black's Wars of the Realm series. I assumed it would continue Drew Carter's story from where the first book, Cloak of the Light, left off. (You can find my review of that book on the Edgy Inspirational Romance blog, if you're interested.) I was already thoroughly invested in those characters -- Drew, Sydney, and Ben in particular -- and in their plight, and wanted to know what came next.

And I still want to know. Because Book 2 doesn't really address that. [Feel free to imagine Karen pulling her hair out right about now, in anticipation of a lengthy wait before Book 3. Just kidding...mostly.]

Honestly, this book was not what I was expecting. Let me hasten to clarify, I don't mean that in a negative way, because I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story too, and I think that what comes next in the series will have even more impact, for having had the extra groundwork laid in this book. I just had to wrap my mind around the shift in perspective and scope of this book before really digging in to enjoy it. But enjoy it, I did.

This book interweaves two main storylines, both told from the perspective of Validus, an angel we first met in Book 1 through his interactions with Drew Carter. Throughout this book, there's a "Present Day" storyline in which we see the same timeframe of Book 1 retold from Validus's perspective, first as he serves as Primus Commander for the angelic forces in North America and later as he fights to protect Drew. Interwoven with this retelling are a series of chapters exploring spiritual warfare throughout Biblical history as experienced by Validus and his fellow angels.

I enjoyed getting to know Validus better and getting a "behind the scenes" glimpse into what might have been going on in the spiritual realm during important moments in Biblical history like Noah's flood, the Tower of Babel, and Jesus' birth and crucifixion. The Reader's Guide in the back was great for delineating which aspects of the story were drawn from Biblical accounts and which were more speculative.

With its emphasis on action, adventure, and heroics, this is a story I would expect to have great appeal for teen boys in particular, as well as anyone enjoying a fast-paced and exciting story. Battle scenes were described blow by blow to the point I could almost have been watching the story play out on the big screen (and yes, I would love to see this series made into a movie). There were quite a few scenes in this book that got my adrenaline going and gave me no choice but to keep turning pages!

Thank you to WaterBrook Multnomah and the Blogging for Books program for providing a copy of this book for review purposes.

What another fantastic novel by Chuck Black!

I am again reminded of how powerful prayer is concerning the spiritual realm. Despite that this was a speculative novel, it amazed me in how one's prayer(s) can change the course of history for our lives, our family's lives, and the people around us.

Again I know this was a speculative novel, but I felt that reading from an angel's perspective that I am much more appreciative of what angels do. It made me realize that angels are powerful (which I knew previously, but it got reaffirmed through reading) and that God has given each one of them a noble purpose that affects the world. I was especially touched by the story of Creation and Crucifixion of Jesus from an angel's perspective.

There was a lot of action in this story that I enjoyed, but admit that sometimes it went over my head (and I think that was due to it overwhelming me with so much action at once). I was really glad to also find out why the Fallen are going for Carter. I definitely didn't expect the reason why!

The reader's guide at the end of the book was very helpful as it had eye-opening information and also had me seeking to dive into the Word about certain issues brought up in the book.

I recommend "Rise of the Fallen" to those who are looking for a novel that is not only action packed, but be touched spiritually.

*(I received this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts expressed are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.)*
