She leaves her family in England in stealth to meet her betrothed in the colony of Williamsburg in the year 1704. He is a British soldier and has already left for the colonies, leaving Celeste to make her way on the next ship. What Celeste doesnt know is that her younger sister, Berta, is on the same ship! After a rough sea voyage in which Berta almost dies, they arrive in the colonies. However, in order to pay for their voyage, both women have had to sign indentured servant contracts. The intent is for Celestes betrothed to buy her contract, destroy it and then marry. When the women arrive in Williamsburg, they quickly discover Celestes fianc doesnt have the money to buy their contracts, so they are forced to work as servants. Celeste faces many more trials and comes to depend on Spenser Rawling, who is an apprentice to a local carpenter.
Maddee Talbot and her younger sister Nicole have grown apart in recent years. Nicole has chosen a path of drugs. Maddee is a perfectionist. Nicole is in a serious car accident and comes to recuperate at Grandmother Talbots home. Grandmother is very wealthy and she has certain ideas about how things should be. She hires an attractive physical therapist, Greg, to work one-on-one with Nicole. Nicole is going crazy at her grandmothers and begs her sister to let her finish her recuperation at Maddees house. Maddee agrees as she longs to be close to her sister once again. They also have some old letters from their Talbot ancestors to read, as well as try to make headway on the almost twenty year mystery brought to light over the summer (and covered in book one in the series). There are two strange men hanging around Maddees house. Nicole comes to depend on Greg as he helps Nicole recover.
I thought the parallels between the two sets of sisters and their respective romances were creative. I would recommend reading book one in the series, My Brothers Crown, first as it lays the groundwork for the present day portions of each book. I liked the use of flashback to the Talbots Huguenot heritage. I also appreciated that both elder sisters in the past and the present relied on God and His will, even though they made mistakes and poor choices as we are all prone to do from time to time. Seeing both of the younger sisters realize their poor choices and maturing was also encouraging to read about. The third book in the series, My Daughters Legacy, will be set in the present with flashbacks to the Civil War time period and I cant wait to read that one!
Cynthia5 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful Story of FamilySeptember 29, 2016CynthiaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I received this book for an honest review from the author and I found it to be wonderful. I had not read the first book in the series in awhile but I was able to pick up where the last book left off because of reference to the last book and also the strong characters in each of the books. This has to do with the 2 sisters, the older sister has always tried to be perfect because she felt she was the ugly duckling in the family but she grew into herself and has a wonderful career but her confidence about herself is still to when she was younger. Then there is her sister who was always thought of as pretty dealing with her own memories and turned to drugs and almost killed herself in a car accident. Between the surgery and staying at her grandmothers she found reprieve at her sisters even if there were conditions on her staying sober. But grandma has a way to help the girls find their connection again and make it stronger. She shares the letters of 2 sisters that were the start of the family being in America. I so enjoyed how through faith they have found their ways and also make them both stronger and brings the older sister true love.
The Avid ReaderDunedin, FLAge: 45-54Gender: Female4 Stars Out Of 5Second book in series!September 23, 2016The Avid ReaderDunedin, FLAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4My Sisters Prayer by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould is the second book in Cousins of the Dove series. Madeline Maddee Talbot is twenty-seven years old and has a busy life (and its about to get busier). Her sister, Nicole gets into a car accident (because of drugs) and needs around the clock care (broke both her legs). She is staying with their Nana (who has a big house and money for caregivers), but Nicole feels smothered. Nicole wants to stay with Maddee (she is whining). Maddee finally agrees to let her stay with her with a few conditions (daily AA meetings are a part of it). Maddee is a little nervous because Nicole was a drug addict, and Maddee is not sure how she will be able to care for Nicole (she has a full-time job). Nicole has doctor appointments, AA meetings, and physical therapy. The two sisters were close when they were little but grew apart after Nicole started her downward spiral with drugs. It all goes back to the dead body that they found in a cabin when they were little (along with their cousins Rene and Danielle). By the time the girls returned with their parents, the body had vanished. No one believed their story. The case is still unsolved. But there is new evidence (thanks to the cousins) and Detective Ortiz is looking into the case. Can solving this case help heal Nicole and the breach between the two sisters? While the two are staying together, Nana gives them some family letters and journals to read. She wants them to go through the papers together.
Celeste Talbot has always done what she has been told to do. But she fell in love with Lt. Jonathan Gray who has been recently assigned to the New World (he had to leave without her). Celeste is running away to be with him. What Celeste does not expect is her sister, Berta to follow her. Celeste does not have enough money for the passage, and signs on as an indentured servant (for four years) to pay for her voyage. Celeste knows Jonathan will buy her contract when they arrive in Williamsburg. Celeste discovers Berta on the ship. Berta ends up very ill and needs constant care. When The Royal Mary arrives in the New World, they land in Norfolk (instead of Williamsburg). The captain sells their contracts and the two girls end up in different cities. Celeste has to find a way to get in touch with Jonathan. Celeste promised Berta she would rescue her as soon as possible. Celeste is in for a big dose of reality. Will she be able to reunite with Berta? Can she find Jonathan and get out of her contract? Join these two sets of sisters on their journey of discovery in My Sisters Prayer.
My Sisters Prayer goes back and forth from present day to the past to tell the story. It is told in the first person (which I really dislike, but after a while I do not notice it). While this is the second book in the series, it can be read alone. The book has very good writing (as usual for these two great authors) and the story draws in the reader. It deals with forgiveness, adversity, the impetuousness of youth, and trusting that God has a plan for your life. You can see the parallels between the two sets of sisters as you read the novel. I give My Sisters Prayer 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould did a very good job at capturing the historical time period. Their writing is very descriptive. I can envision what they are describing. Past events are not wrapped up in My Sisters Prayer. We will have to await the next novel to find out more about the man that died in the cabin. I will definitely be reading more books by these two authors.

An Old Fashioned GirlMinnesotaAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Historical romance/contemporary suspenseSeptember 23, 2016An Old Fashioned GirlMinnesotaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I would highly recommend reading the first book in the series before this one; though the historical tale is basically stand-alone, the modern mystery storyline is developed across the series, and each book builds on the previous. Granted, even the historical tales are based on the same family line, so it's nice to follow the generations.
The two stories tie well together, but they aren't the same story set in two different time periods. Though there are echoes of Celeste's story in the modern Maddie's tale--namely, an elder sister watching out for her younger, less disciplined sister, and a few similarities in the romance department--they both were intriguing in their own way. I enjoyed the focus on indentured servitude in the colonial side, though Celeste could be frustratingly impulsive in her choices.
I really like the modern story that is being continued through the books--from the childhood discovery of a murder to it's successful solving? Okay, we're not that far yet. Hopefully, that will be the case, though. It's interesting to see the bond between the four cousins, the manifestations of the trauma each of them endured at a young age, and the slow process of healing. I liked how Maddie was already working on toning down her perfectionism at the start of the book, and the progress she makes throughout. I thought the authors did a good job with her relationship with Nicole and aiding her in overcoming addiction. Even knowing exactly what needs to be done, watching her sister's evasions of the truth, wanting to be easier on her, and maintaining a good relationship are all still really (and realistically) hard on Maddie.
Thank you Harvest House and NetGalley for providing an e-book for review; I was not required to make the review positive, and all opinions are my own.
KGervaisTroy, NYAge: 55-65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Wow!! A Great Book.September 21, 2016KGervaisTroy, NYAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0This is absolutely, positively an excellent book. I couldn't stop reading it. The first book was also excellent and it just keeps getting better as the series goes on. My Sisters Prayer is the second book in the Cousins of the Dove series (My Brothers Crown is the first book). The books can be read as a stand-alone or in order as a series - I just found out in an email by the author Mindy Starns Clark. But, if I were you, I would start with the first book and read them in order to better understand who the characters are, where they come from and to be able to follow the story between the two time periods. There will be two more books of the series coming out in 2017 and 2018. I don't know if I can wait that long!! I am really enjoying this series and you will too once you start reading them. I highly recommend My Sisters Prayer (and My Brothers Crown).
I was given a copy of this book by the author/publisher in exchange for my honest review.
