Steven James in his new book, "Every Crooked Path" published by Signet gives us another adventure with Special Agent Patrick Bowers.

From the back cover: Who is the Piper? . . .

Special Agent Patrick Bowers returns in an electrifying prequel to the Bowers Chess series from critically acclaimed, national bestselling novelist Steven James.

A mysterious suicide and a series of abductions draw Patrick into a web of intrigue involving an international conspiracy where no one is who they appear to be and the stakes have never been higher.

Soon, Patrick discovers that the secret to stopping the Pipers current crime spree lies in unlocking answers from an eight-year-old cold caseand the only way to do that is by entering the terrifying world of the conspirators himself.

Dark, probing, and chilling, Every Crooked Path takes an unflinching look at the world of todays cybercrimes and delves into a parents worst nightmare as it launches a new chapter of Patrick Bowers thrillers.

"Every Crooked Path" takes place after "Opening Moves" so Patrick is still new to this so while he is still his highly efficient self he does makes a few mistakes. Steven James loads his high-octane thriller with so much misinformation and deceit that it takes a lot of concentration just to keep your head above water. The book races along at lightening speed and all the characters are put their paces trying to solve this crime spree and put all the pieces together. "The Piper" is an amazing character and I didn't figure out who he was so well done. Mr. James warns us in his Author's Note that this book deals with online predators. Mr. James does not lead us into the dark web to not just write about evil to magnify it; no, he writes about evil to show how it can be fought, contained and triumphed over. Child pornography and child sex-trafficking is at an all-time high level but it can be defeated. Do not start this book late at night because it will cost you sleep as you will not want to put it down. This is another really great offering from the pen of Steven James. If you enjoy a good adventure thriller then this is the book for you!

Debs Dozen: Patrick Bowers is Back but Will He Have to Pay the Piper?

Steven James has brought back Special Agent Patrick Bowers in an exciting prequel to the Chess series, and I am delighted. This Bowers is a younger, less sophisticated version, yet still astute and adept at solving conundrums. James still delights in twists and turns and dead ends and captivating characters.

Patrick has been loaned to the NYPD to work on a task force attempting to shut down a large child pornography network headed by The Piper as well as solve the kidnappings and murders of many children over the past few years. His geospatial take on crime and criminals intrigues one of the task force members, Tobin Cavanaugh, whose daughter, Adrienne, was one of those kidnapped and killed. Together, Tobin and Patrick, along with Patricks partner, Jodie, attempt to follow the traces of these high tech pornographers and pedophiles.

The topic is terrible but timely. Child pornography and child sex-trafficking is at an all-time high level. Todays technology enables abusers to pander to their filthy habits with great facility by tapping into the Dark Webone hidden behind firewalls and ever-shifting URLs and IDs. James does not describe the images, thank goodness, but the horror of the reactions of those faced with them in the pursuit of justice.

We also meet Christine Ellis, Patricks first love, and her daughter, Tessa. I enjoyed watching Patrick learn to talk with and interact with the highly intelligent Tessa. Reluctant to engage with him at first, they start to bond over logic puzzles and an interactive video game. Tessa loves her mother above all else and recognizes she loves PatrickTessa, therefore, wants Patrick to stick around.

Although the topic is unpalatable, the intrigue is not. Youll be entranced by the stratagems and webs woven both by the police and the perpetrators. Steven James has provided us an excellent introduction to Patrick Bowers, and we start to learn about the man weve grown to love through the Chess series. Id give Every Crooked Path: The Bowers Files four starsnot because of the writing, which is superb, but because of the topic, which is distasteful though the subject may be timely and one that we should be cognizant of.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Steven James

Submitted: January 06, 2016

Tell us a little about yourself.  For the past ten years I've been working as a novelist, and even before then, storytelling was always important to my life. When I wasn't telling stories to my kids, I was traveling around the country telling them to those who would listen.

What was your motivation behind this project?  As I was researching cybercrime, I became more and more aware of how internet predators target people online. The issue is so vital in or culture today, I wanted to examine it through the lens of a thriller.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope readers will be entertained in a thought-provoking way. My guess is they'll never look at the internet the same way again.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  As I studied the cycle of temptation and the lure of darkness, it woke me up to the necessity of being constantly aware of God's presence.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  As a storyteller, I was deeply impacted by Calvin Miller's Singer trilogy. It helped me to see issues of faith through the eyes of story.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Every Crooked Path is intense, however, it never celebrates the darkness. It is redemptive. If you haven't read it, you need to check it out!
