Product Description

Paul addresses issues in First Corinthians that aren't always grounded in explicitly theological problems. Yet he frames them in theological terms and reflects on them in light of the gospel. Now Richard Hays discusses the letter's major theological themes, as well as issues such as community formation and the rethinking of inherited sociocultural norms and practices, offering Paul as a model for ministry.

Publisher's Description

Paul's first letter to the Corinthians was addressed originally to a fledgling mission church in Corinth. Paul's absence from the church had allowed serious problems to arise within the Corinthian community, but the problems that he addresses in this letter do not always seem based on explicitly theological ideas. The brilliance of Paul, though, is that he frames the issues in theological terms and reflects on them in the light of the gospel.

Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching is a distinctive resource for those who interpret the Bible in the church. Planned and written specifically for teaching and preaching needs, this critically acclaimed biblical commentary is a major contribution to scholarship and ministry.

This is not a verse by verse commentary, but it is extremely helpful as an aid in teaching/preaching preparation. Actually, Hays is such a gifted writer and his commentary flows so nicely that I have found myself wanting to justread it straight through! I especially appreciated the commentary on 1 Corinthians 11-14. A great work by Dr. Hays!
