Publisher's Description

". . .a setting and plot that would make Agatha Christie herself sit up and take notice."
—RT Book Reviews

A mysterious invitation to spend Christmas at an English manor home may bring danger...and love?

England, 1851: When Clara Chapman receives an intriguing invitation to spend Christmas at an English manor home, she is hesitant yet feels compelled to attend—for if she remains the duration of the twelve-day celebration, she is promised a sum of five hundred pounds.

But is she walking into danger? It appears so, especially when she comes face to face with one of the other guests—her former fiancé, Benjamin Lane.

Imprisoned unjustly, Ben wants revenge on whoever stole his honor. When he’s given the chance to gain his freedom, he jumps at it—and is faced with the anger of the woman he stood up at the altar. Brought together under mysterious circumstances, Clara and Ben discover that what they’ve been striving for isn’t what ultimately matters.

What matters most is what Christmas is all about . . . love.

Pour a cup of tea and settle in for Book 1 of the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series--a page-turning Victorian-era holiday tale--by Michelle Griep, a reader and critic favorite.

Author Bio

Michelle Griep has been writing since she first discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. She seeks to glorify God in all that she writes—except for that graffiti phase she went through as a teenager. She resides in the frozen tundra of Minnesota, where she teaches history and writing classes for a local high school co-op. An Anglophile at heart, she runs away to England every chance she gets, under the guise of research. Really, though, she’s eating excessive amounts of scones while rambling around a castle. Michelle is a member of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) and MCWG (Minnesota Christian Writers Guild). Editorial Reviews

"A Victorian treasure filled with atmospheric mystery, humor, romance, unexpected twists, and quirky characters that would make Charles Dickens proud. Michelle Griep has penned a winner!"
—Julie Klassen, bestselling, award-winning author

"Hands down, the most fun I've had reading a book in a long time! With a plot reminiscent of a mystery dinner theater, the author gathers a cast of characters you will not soon forget into an English manor where murder, mayhem, and mystery ensue. Add in a speck of romance and a sprinkle of humor, and you have a masterpiece of literary entertainment."
—MaryLu Tyndall, award-winner author of the Legacy of the King's Pirates series

"Fans of Victorian Era romance will swoon over 12 Days at Bleakly Manor: Book 1 in Once Upon a Dickens Christmas by Michelle Griep. Her characters are mesmerizing, her writing flawless—a winning combination!"
—Elizabeth Ludwig, author of A Tempting Taste of Mystery

With an intriguing nod to Dickens’ Bleak House, plus a setting and plot that would make Agatha Christie herself sit up and take notice, Griep’s latest will be a hit with fans of Victorian mysteries. In this reverse-of-sorts And Then There Were None, the eccentric characters are layered with slowly revealed stories designed to keep readers’ minds whirling with the possibilities. A thread of romance runs throughout the story, accentuating but never overwhelming the plot. Best of all, perhaps, is the setting, which wraps readers in cozy warmth and simultaneously sends chills down their spines.

During the cold months, I love curling up with a hot cup of tea and a captivating read as the snow swirls around outside my window, so when I came across this historical mystery set around Christmastime, I just knew it would be the right pick to cozy up with. This mystery was the perfect reminder to appreciate the ones you love, especially around the holidays.

Michelle Griep has been on my list of want-check-out authors for quite awhile. I've heard a lot of great things about her historical fiction from a variety of people. Then I saw the blurb for this book and decided that this would be the perfect one to start with, after all it is the Christmas season and the book sounded so interesting.

What a story to start with! 12 Days At Bleakly Manor has it all: mystery, danger, romance, quirky characters, a house with secrets of its own, and a lovely holiday setting. I had a fun time reading this book and will definitely be looking for more from this author. I enjoyed trying to puzzle everything out and I was in for some real surprises along with hero and heroine.

12 Days At Bleakly Manor is great story of redemption and second chances. Each of Michelle Griep's sometimes peculiar characters is searching for something, whether good or bad, and all of them will find it, and more, on a strange holiday in a rather odd English manor. What will You find this Christmas.....?

I enjoyed this book. There was plenty of suspense and it kept me guessing until the very end. It kind of reminded me of the movie "Clue." All of the characters worked well together and I enjoyed the interaction between Ben and Clara. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

This Christmas story, sure to one day be a classic, kept me intrigued right up until the end. What a great Christmas movie this would make with its blend of quirky characters! Names that almost seemed to be made up by the characters themselves had me chuckling. Names like Miss Scurry, Mr. Minnow, Inspector Pocket, Mademoiselle Pretents, and Mr. Tallgrass. Each were at Bleakly Manor by invitation and a promise of 500 pounds if they stuck it out for 12 days. After all were assembled including Clara Chapman and Ben Lane, the butler announced that only one would be receiving the monetary award, the last one left in the manor. Like on a game show almost, accidents kept happening, one by one numbers dwindled as some left. For such a fine manor, heat was scarce, and food was almost non-existent, and what little was served was very undesirable. The mystery of who the host was and the feeling of eyes staring wherever they went kept an eerie feeling about the rooms. I found myself holding my breath many times as strange and unexplained things began to happen. This was my kind of Christmas story!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher but was not required to write a review.

Slip back in time to the mid-1800s and find yourself caught up in suspense and intrigue as a variety of English citizens are summoned to a manor at Christmas. Each is promised a reward of something longed for if they remain twelve days. Sounds simple, right? But danger and conflict may drive them all away before time expires. Who has woven this web and how could the person know so much about the individuals invited? I enjoy mysteries and historicals, so this definitely fit the bill for a fun read that kept me guessing who was behind this scheme and how it would all end. It would be a great read any time of year, but perfect for wintertime relaxing by a fire. The characters are believable and the situation beckons turning the page to discover what will occur next. Secrets abound. Can you figure it all out before the protagonists learn the answers? I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

Would you take a gift from a stranger by staying at a Manor for 12 days to receive it? These people did and each day brought about a surprise. Good, bad, funny or deadly! I enjoyed the mystery, the suspense and the ending not what I suspected! Totally enjoyed it! I was gifted a copy from Barbour Publishing and my review is voluntary..
