Product Description

Suzanne Zimmerman was only seventeen and pregnant when her shamed mother quietly sent her away from their Old Order Mennonite community in Kansas. With her old home, family, and first love firmly behind her, Suzanne moved to Indiana, became a nurse, and raised a daughter, Alexa, on her own.

Now, nearly twenty years later, an unexpected letter arrives from Kansas. Her brother asks her to bring her nursing abilities home and care for their ailing mother. His request requires that Suzanne face a family that may not have forgiven her and a strict faith community. It also means seeing Paul Aldrich, her first love. Paul, widowed with an eight-year-old son, is relieved to see Suzanne again, giving him the chance to beg her forgiveness for his past indiscretion. But when he meets Alexa, his guilt flickers in the glare of Suzanne's prolonged secret-one that changes everything. Suzanne had let go of any expectation for forgiveness long ago. Does she dare hope in mercy-and how will her uncovered past affect the people she loves the most?

I'd debated on this series, being a 41 year veteran of teaching; knowing first hand society's multiple layers of dramatically changing family dynamics. I knew the story would be well-written; though the wandering story lines were a challenge at times. Also, Paul and Anna-Grace were underwritten characters. But the interplay of adopted children, moms who gave up their children, and adoptive parents was total fiction; bearing no resemblance to actuality. Yes, this is fiction, but domestic adoptions where birth parents are sought and or found never, in my 41 years ends well. Anna-Grace reflected her name in handling the news; that was, no pun intended, the 'saving grace' of the story. I've assisted in two dozen foreign adoptions - always best, for there are no questions or people from your past. You weren't wanted by one family; but you've been redeemed by one family who desperately wants you. Adoption is great - if the doors to the past are closed. Same is true on broken romantic relationships. MOVE ON. I suppose this critique is unfair, as it's the authenticity of the content, not the style; but it just didn't resonate as a story I'd keep or should have read.

This book is the first book in Kim Vogel Sawyer's new series, the Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy. I have always enjoyed Sawyer's books and have yet to read one by her that I have disliked. This book was such a wonderful start to this new series. I'm excited to see where she goes with the next two books!

My heart broke in several places in this book. The relationship between Suzanne and her mother was tense, to say the least. I can understand why because of some of the decisions Suzanne made, but the unforgiveness was sad. I can understand the disappointment from her mother, but I longed to see that relationship restored. Even after all of the pain that Suzanne experienced, I couldn't help but want her to have a happy ending.

The story landed itself to irony when Suzanne's brother contacts her. Who would have ever thought! However because of this, her life just may go in a different direction that she ever intended. Or maybe she dreamed of it long, long ago.

I am looking forward to getting my hands on the next book in the series. It'll be a great book to take to the beach with me, I think!

The first book in the Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy, Sawyer writes the story of Susanne Zimmerman, a woman rejected by her mother who then sets out to build her own life for her and her daughter. Becoming pregnant at the age of seventeen, Suzy's mother sends her away with the promise that Suzy can return after she delivers and gives the baby to her cousin. But when Suzy doesn't return, her mother weaves a story of her "missionary daughter." Meanwhile Susanne, as she prefers to be called, builds a new life as nurse and secretly raises her daughter. Called home unexpectedly to care for her injured mother, Susanne walks a fine line between her family and the shame of being an unwed mother. Things intensify when her old beau is called upon to remodel the family home. Can Susanne keep the situation from boiling over before she can leave? Or will her family ties always be strained?

This is the first Sawyer book I've ever read. I was hesitant to try a new author, but the story quickly drew me in and I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. While this is an Amish/Mennonite book, the themes are very universal. It wasn't long before I forgot about the religion of the characters and was heavily invested in their internal struggles. Throughout this book, we're faced with questions of family, loyalty, forgiveness, and fear. Most of all this is a book about relationships: who we will fight for, who we will fight with, and how hard will we work to save a relationship.

This was one of the best Amish fiction books I've read in awhile. The author weaves a story that takes more twists and turns than you would think imaginable. Just when I thought I had this one figured out, the author would twist the story again. This book is definitely worth a read and I'm anxious the read the next in the trilogy.

When Mercy Rains by Kim Vogel Sawyer is the first book in the Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy. In some of the author's latest books, I couldn't figure out why they weren't as good as some of her first books, but now I see why - this genre is where she shines! I fell in love with this author's work once again. It has suspense, sadness, bitterness, and joy with realistic characters that you root for every step of the way. I wasn't ready to the let story go, and my only consolation is that there are two more books coming. And the sequel is already out! Whoo hoo!!!

Suzanne Zimmerman left home in disgrace when she was seventeen. Her mother told her to give up the baby to her cousins and then return home, but Suzanne never came back home. Instead she made a life for herself in Indiana, became a nurse, and worked at a Mennonite hospital. She hasn't been home in twenty years and has no plans of returning until she receives a letter from her brother, Clete, asking her to come and take care of their paralyzed mother. Shocked, Suzanne can't even think of going, but her daughter, Alexa, convinces her it's the right thing to do. So they head to Kansas for two months.

No one knows about Alexa, and Suzanne isn't going to explain herself to anyone especially Paul Aldrich, the boy she loved so long ago. Can she make it two months without spilling all her long held secrets?

What follows is a captivating story of betrayal and forgiveness, truth being set free of the lies, joy amidst pain, and finally some peace. The story was a good reminder to not let bitterness take root in your heart especially since it damages everyone around you. Forgiveness was a big component here, and I can't wait to read more about this family. There is still some growing that needs to be done with all the characters. If you enjoy stories with depth, you will love this book. I highly recommend this book!

I was given this book free from Waterbrook Multnomah in exchange for an honest review.
