Product Description

1 Timothy originated with a series of Sunday evening sermons preached at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. In keeping with the subject matter of the book itself, the focus of the exposition is on its practical implications for life in the local church. The author chose to preach from this New Testament book early in his ministry, so as to get the full benefit of Paul's instructions to Timothy as a young man in gospel ministry

About the Reformed Expository Commentary Series:

The Reformed Expository Commentary focuses on the English rendering of the biblical text, and thus does not address concerns of the original language nor academic technicalities. Rather, proceeding section-by-section it focuses on the narrative flow of the biblical book, while drawing out significant points or theological emphases in the text, and then applies them to the daily life of the Christian.

br/>The various points addressed range between historical events taking place within a books narrative, or upon significant doctrinal statements that are made. The application or "guidance" section as the series calls it rounds out each of the particular emphases from the text making it a complete expository volume. Each commentary approaches the text from a Reformed theological perspective, and can be used profitably for either study or devotion.

Major Perspectives:

  • Scripture: Inerrant & Revealed
  • Theology: Traditional/Conservative Reformed
  • Wider Tradition: Protestant/Evangelical
  • Audience: Pastors/Laity
  • Uses: Scripture Study, General Reading, Devotional

Publisher's Description

This commentary’s subtitle, “Defend the Faith,” highlights its recurring emphasis on defending and promoting orthodox theology. Other significant themes include the conducting of public worship, the qualifications of elders and deacons (and the wives who have a share in their ministry), the personal godliness of the gospel minister, the proper spiritual and practical care of various members of the local church, and the right Christian use of material possessions.

Editorial Reviews

Following on from his Galatians volume, Phil Ryken provides us with another cornucopia of insight and knowledge. Few portions of the Scripture affect the way we understand what the church in the twenty-first century should look like than does 1 Timothy, and few contemporary guides could better guide us through these issues than Phil Ryken. This volume signals preaching and teaching at its very best, a model for all preachers in our time. -- Derek W.H. Thomas, Chancellors Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church (ARP), Columbia, South Carolina

Some commentaries lose the forest for the trees, and others the trees for the forest. This series promises to be both exegetically sensitive and theologically faithful. -- Mark Dever, senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.

A canonical, Reformed expositional commentary has long been a desideratum, and we are now in debt to this gifted team of pastor-theologians for brining it to pass. -- Ligon Duncan, Chancellor and CEO, Reformed Theological Seminary

Here is exposition modeled by pastors with scholarly gifts and by scholars with pastors’ hearts. Exegetical and theological reliability, redemptive historical sesitivity, a Christ-centered focus, and contemporary practical application---these are the promised hallmarks of the series. May it serve as a model to encourage and enthuse a new generation to love the Word of God and to rediscover the life-transforming power if expository preaching! -- Sinclair Ferguson, Chancellors Professor, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries
