Beautifully written, intricately plotted and populated by engaging and realistic characters, The Curiosity Keeper is Regency romantic suspense at its page-turning best. A skillful, sympathetic and refreshingly natural author, Ladd is at the top of her game and should be an auto-buy for every reader.' -4 1/2 starred review and July 2015 Top Pick!
Anna MaeAge: Over 65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5The Curiosity Seeker by Sarah E. LaddJune 14, 2016Anna MaeAge: Over 65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Excellent read! Couldn't put it down. There were little surprises throughout revealing secrets that helped me understand exactly where the characters were coming from. Causes self examination as to one's values and motives, true or false. I wish Sarah would have completed the verse ..."all things work together for good...to them that LOVE God." Important omission - the condition for all things to work together for good. Would have liked a little more expansion of faith and God although it was understood in the way Camille and Jonathan lived their lives and how God rewarded them in the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will look forward eagerly to reading other books by her.
MagisterMichiganAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Regency romance satisfies on all countsMay 28, 2016MagisterMichiganAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 0This was the first book I've read by Ladd, and what an edition she makes to my favorite authors! She has a real knack for creating genuine characters and weaving interesting plot twists. I particularly enjoyed the gentle way she brought Biblical faith to bear on her characters' decisions and development. That and the clean language and crisp pace make this an easy book to recommend wholeheartedly.
Camille and Jonathan are lonely singles focused on their jobs, and painfully aware of their fathers' distance and disappointment in them. What a modern predicament! - but this is a regency romance set in England in the early 1800's. The theft of a valuable, unpolished ruby causes their paths to cross, and suddenly two people from very different backgrounds are forced to reevaluate their priorities...and their opinions of each other. Who is really trustworthy? What is truly important? Camille and Jonathan aren't the only ones to discover the answers to these questions.
As in most romance novels, you can predict the "who" of the happy ending, but the "how" will leave you breathless and spellbound. Sarah Ladd does a wonderful job of showing her readers how the Bevoy ruby is both a blessing and a curse in this great read.
GingerS2195 Stars Out Of 5Far above rubies...October 14, 2015GingerS219Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5As I sit to write this review, the verse in Proverbs 31 comes to mind. "Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies." (NLT)
Camille and Jonathan's story was full of intrigue, though it's not listed as a suspense, and love--sacrificial love. I enjoyed getting to know both the keeper of the curiosity shop and the apothecary. I loved "seeing" the things in the shop. Both characters had a deep need to care for others and it made me care for them. This novel pulled me in and kept me there, wondering how everything was going to work out.
I received this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.
KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Awesome readOctober 1, 2015KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My Regency lovin' heart is pitter-pattering a rapid staccato beat once again. Can't explain why I love this time period so much but I do! Curling up with The Curiosity Keeper turned a bad day into something so much better. I love it when an author can sweep me away on page one and Sarah E. Ladd did just that.
I connected to Camille right away. It felt like the sharp shards of her brokenness pierced my own heart somehow. My emotions ran all over the place on her behalf. From wild indignation to rampant rage to heart crushing sorrow. Camille was much more stoic in the face of adversity than I was during this read!
I love the fact that nobly bred Jonathan works as the village apothecary. He's such a contradiction of the time and doesn't quite fit with his own family. He's kind and compassionate, and has such an engaging bedside manner -- I came near to swooning in those scenes. Such a gentle man.
Camille and Jonathan's action-packed first meet sets the course for a dramatic tale full of intrigue and danger. That mystery casts a shadow over their chance at happiness though. Trusts have been broken. Family torn asunder. Greed and deceit threaten. There is a quiet message of hope in God's ability to bring about good from evil and the resounding climax of this story is a testimony of that.
A superb Regency that you'll want to gobble up in one sitting.
Britt98Grand Prairie, TXAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5EnjoyableSeptember 21, 2015Britt98Grand Prairie, TXAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I enjoy taking a break from my busy life and diving into a time period very unlike my own. This is one of the things about regency era fiction that I find so enjoyable. The story and situations are a bit slower paced, and the behavior expectations for both men and especially toward women are very high. Throw in some mystery or suspense and Im a happy reader.
That is the case in The Curiosity Keeper by Sarah E. Ladd. I really enjoyed this trip back in time. The book is filled with interesting characters, from the main characters Jonathan Gilchrist and Camille Iverness, to the many side characters that who made me cringe, doubt, or a combination of both.
The romance is subtle as is the suspense. The danger to Camille Iverness is clear and shows up early in the story. It is interesting that a couple of the key players behind the mystery of the missing gem become known to the reader immediately, yet the author kept me guessing about a few of the others. I did have a pretty good idea as to who was behind it all, but watching Jonathan and Camille discover all of the players and the reasons behind the mystery of the missing ruby was highly entertaining.
If you are a fan of regency, Id recommend The Curiosity Keeper. And if you are a fan of suspense, the curious happenings in this story will enhance your enjoyment of this tale from a time gone by.
